Script that allows people to start their own blogs...
... on your server. Anyone knows a script that does this? I want it to be like WordPress.com, where people can sign up and maybe also have a profile page etc.

Wordpress is great, and you can use Blogger.com to make blogs on your domains for free. Joomla is decent and free as well.
If you want to make a large number of blogs and control them all easily, I use and hightly recommend Blog Solution. ![]()

http://mu.wordpress.org/
WordPress MU, or multi-user, is designed to do exactly that. It is most famously used for WordPress.com where it serves tens of millions of hits on hundreds of thousands of blogs each day.

Just a few recommendations:
Use captchas or you'll be spammed to death by the viagra & co. autogenerator and poster bots. "Recaptcha" is a great and very hard to break solution. Allow people to customize their permalinks, many don't want any date based archives. Upload at least "All In One SEO" or a similar plugin, maybe activated by default, so people don't produce more duplicate content than necessary. A SEO plugin is a must have. Use widget ready templates only, so people can customize their templates and add additional ads in the sidebar via the text widget, but do never allow template code editing, too many abusers. Make a list of the latest updated blogs on the homepage, so people are motivated to post often to get a link from the homepage. |
