I know linux lovers say "this is linux's" year every year but this year just might be it. Businesses need to cut costs and Linux is a good way for them to do that.

With the amount of Netbooks expected to sell his year and given how good Linpus Linux is I suppose it might well be.

It will never happen. Most businesses buy cheap $500 computers now a days for their employees and Windows is included anyway. Not to mention most businesses environments are already Windows domain environments.

Too much "snag" for the average user! I have tested 7-8 distros and there are always something that makes me go back to windows. Sad, but true!

not until at least 2012. It takes a long time to convince people to change.

As much as I love *nix for server environments, there is one cardinal flaw in X that keeps me running Windows for my desktop workstation.

CONFIGURING XORG.CONF FOR DUAL MONITORS IS HELL.

Once X reaches a point where I can install my distro, install the video driver and it JUST WORKS, I'll never need to work in Windows again. Dont get me wrong, I'm very *nix proficient, but fuck - as it stands, setting up dual screen is a fucking PITA. Mind you, that's if you're working with Nvidia. ATI? Forget it.

If anyone happens to know a workaround for this, please let me know.

No, this is not the year of linux. 2014 or 2015 might be it.

I always found it pretty easy, the hardest was when I had two video cards going in 1999... In recent distros though it's been a breeze using the graphical utilities that come with Fedora and Ubuntu.

business' rarely upgrade, it cost more to switch to a new software version imagine switching OS it'll be a nightmare. yes linux is free but you have to think about the support need, 3rd party software, and training existing employees. Normally a company wont bother upgrading if everything is running fine. I still see windows NT 2000 on computers 10yrs later (i believe it came out in 1999)

Hmmm, could you relate what card you were using, and what release of fedora/ubuntu?

2009 will be the year of Open Office replacing MS office. Too expensive for companies to purchase MS office now.

Truth is it could have been.

I say that because the PS3 runs various versions of LINUX (I use Ubuntu). The PS3 is a powerful piece of hardware but Sony has chosen NOT to allow access to the GPU, making it perform extremely poorly with the GUI apps like GNOME.

Had Sony allowed access to the graphics hardware Linux could have gotten a much better foothold, as it is its like buying a Ferrari that wont go more than 55MPH

I would agree from a server point of view, paying $20-40/mn surcharges on Windows servers is gonna take a hit directly to bottom lines, but I don't see this shift happening on the consumer market.
