you can make a free hosted blog... there's a wordpress plugin that can handle affiliate codes and replace a string in links with ref code of your affiliate.

but i don't think no one has ever built a paysite using wordpress before...

Putting content behind a paid members area in wordpress is very simple, there are several plugins to do this. Many are mainstream versions, but easily modded to work.

I'm not recommending it, but its easily doable.

I am building a tour as we speak using WP. The member's area however will likely be handled by one of our MPA3 or NATSv4 installs though. The tour part is easy, and now that WP has become a full blown CMS with seemingly tens of thousands of plug-ins and templates, for SEO and some other purposes, it makes sense in some cases to use WP as a tour platform.

I'm sure it's entirely possible, however starting with a tried and tested paysite CMS would be your best option as it's built specifically for your purpose. You'll probably save a lot of time, money, and headaches in not having to hack up Wordpress.

I see a bunch of the babe / erotic content sites using wp or something similar as paysite tours. I think they look really badass and looks to be working pretty well as far as search engines are concerned. My only question would load on wp be a issue? I have had some pretty serious load related problems using wordpress for traffic generation. I can only imagine that the same would be an issue for a paysite tour. The potential load from affiliates sending clicks may be to much for WP to handle, even with some of the caching plugins out there. I am not a wordpress expert though.

The feedback that I have found is that any traffic over 10k is the threshold for WP. Anything over that and you are going into the never-ending battle to keep it running. This assumes that you are already using the supercache (etc.) plugins/mods to run it.

Also, some knowledge of how WP interacts with the database and php calls is necessary, because one plugin or badly coded page can result in excess database hits that just kill your performance.

I have never had my Wordpress installs magically stop working because of a update and if a plugin is buggy I know right away.. *shrug*

I use wordpress for A LOT of different sites not just simple blogs..

10k shouldnt even phase a wp with a cache plugin. Must be on a real weak ass host.

we've done it and we're about to launch the core engine to do that, not only tours, but also members area. Anyone saying it's not possible basically has no idea about what he/she is talking about, so don't pay attention to them

On a side note, this kind of WP tours and beats almost any CMS out there, and as you may imagine, WP grows every single day, while you can expect 1 or 2 updates a year from any other CMS, so it's easy to see that not only it can be done, but it will be the way to do it very soon. Really affordable, extremely customizable and with 10x more features than any other script out there, it would be dumb not to do it that way

Most of the anti-wordpress opinions in this topic are probably not based on any real evidence. I'd bet several have tried and find it working just fine for their needs. The platform is very flexible and as long as someone knows their way around it and keeps up with relevant security notices, it should be doable.

Solid hardlinked pages on a real domain give cohesive attraction & buyer confidence to microniche paysites, in contrast wordpress clutter can too easily distract or gloss over the viewer.
