One last ditch effort for Playboy?

I wonder what it would be like if instead of selling playboy Hefner announced his
retirement and named a new CEO(to take over the mansion ).

And say the new CEO was a 30 yr old male that was a fairly well known rich playboy.

Kind of like if JFK Jr were alive and there was enough money to get him to take over
playboy. </improbable analogy used to typecast the CEO>

Hmmmmmmmmmmm?

I mean, do young buyers look at 83 yr old Hefner as something cool that they want to be?
I doubt it.
But that used to be part of it : "Damn, I want to be THAT guy".

Who could actually fit that role? I can't think of anybody.
But I got a feeling that if even Snoop Dog was named CEO the magazine would do better.

A CEO should not be a "rich playboy," particularly the new CEO of a struggling company that is looking for a rebirth.

That CEO needs to be a visionary, needs to be a leader, needs to watch the market and not only see where it is but see where it's going.

Man playboy just never embraced the web fully. They wanted to keep with the same old stuff their magazine and DVDs. PB was in the best position in the world 10 years ago to take full advantage of the web, same as hustler and neither of them did it.

The problems they both see today are their own fault for not keeping up with the times. I'm sure they could pull the rabbit out of the hat and make a turn around but honestly they would need a whole new out look on their company..

I just thought of somebody that I would actually try that idea with.

Pdiddy....

The king of hype.

I swear I'd try to let him run playboy for six months before I sold it.

You're right that it's not easy, but what I'm saying is you have to at least be
on the map of public interest before you can go anywhere.

Younger people have come in and kept many industries alive especially in entertainment.
This magazine is all about the "playboy image".
The current "nature" of the playboy is just not present in an 83 yr old man.

He doesn't know what is "cool" anymore.

I dont think that ANY of the magazines really and truly embraced the web. I think they should have. Score comes close but not close enough.

magazine business is dead, playboy needs to use their name and do certain things and they can easily make 100mil + within the next 18 months, the management is old fashioned zero understanding of making money now or they would of changed things a long time ago.

Hef has not been the CEO of Playboy since 1988 at the very latest.

You are looking for a fancy front/hype man, not a CEO.

Playboy needs a solid business plan before any front man can save them.

Yep, as soon as the web went live playboy.com should have been ready to
snag and retain all that type in traffic.

Agreed that I'm really talking about a "fancy front/hype man", just saying that
without being CEO then I don't see how to make him legit to the company.

You have to replace Hefner's face. He founded the magazine so it goes with
the face that the hype person is the head huncho of the company.

there is something to be said for that. Playboy is another generations Icon, it is dated. Could you start the same concept today, as Hef did way back then and succed for the same amount of time ? I doubt it. The idea of someone living a playboy lifestyle today, with multiple partners, is so 70's, it wont fly with todays std infected society. Need a new spin on things, that will appeal to the teens coming of age today, who will be your customers of tomorrow

What if playboy.com had been the first live cam site and all the live cam girls were
former playmates?

Pay for private chat. Girls get salary plus commision.

That would have been interesting.

Hustler almost had it back in the late '90s. They screwed up by hiring that guy Tony Tang to get it going and he didn't know anything about bringing it all together. I sat with the guy and all he talked about was his exotic firewalls from Nakamichi, digging up the streets of Beverly Hills to run fiber optics to the building and the $250,000.00 CMS that they just purchased. At the time, I didn't even know Nakamichi made firewalls and I didn't need to know that. While he was talking to me, I remember thinking, does Larry Flynt know that you're wasting his money. All I wanted to know was how broadcastsex.com was going to make me money with my content and he couldn't give me an answer.

That would really help their brand. Problem is, they just don't sell a product anybody wants. The best image in the world doesn't help if you don't sell something. Of course, if someone new could step in, make the brand seem young again, and then launch some new products, it could be a big turn around.

I don't think you can compare Hustler with Playboy, not with any big old school brand out there.

Larry started with internet in 1996, I guess some time later they hired WebQuest, which was a very good move as it (reportingly) immediately multiplied their profits from Online.

Just check Hustler Cash - they have everything in place, they target niches they are not stuck with the Hustler brand more than they should be.

I'll bet am all inclusive night in one of our clubs that Hustler is doing VERY well.

Very well said...But the "rabbit out of the hat" was a good line for Playboy.
I agree though, Playboy should have dominated the web.

no young person respects richard branson for chrissake. weird old dude with a mullet.

the brand will be sold off to the lowest bidder and become wal-mart merchandise.

i have always thought it would be the Maloofs or Donald Trump - Richard Branson makes sense too.

i'd love to see Howard Stern get it - he could raise the money no problem.

George Clooney would be good as the front man living in the Mansion but George is one of those guys who's gonna grow old as a wannabe political activist trying to convince people he's not a moron.

Saw Hef with some Playmates at the Lakers game last night in Laker's owner Jerry Buss' luxury box swapping slobber with 3-4 hotties during a timeout.

I'm guessing he's not too worried about things.

Hell, he gets to be buried next to Marilyn Monroe when he finally kicks the bucket - not a bad way to spend eternity either.

this is like trying to keep the rolling stones going after mick retires, its not going to happen, the brand merchandise will always be worth money but there wont be anything new coming out under the playboy label, in my opinion
