The Fat Get Fatter?!?!
These are some crazy statistics...
![]() The lightest blue areas have less than 10% obesity rates, the next two blue shades represent 10-20% obesity rates. This is where we were in 1991, with no state in the US (which reported data, the white areas didn't report) having greater than 20% obesity. ![]() The purple is 20-25% obesity, followed by red at 25-30% and orange at greater than 30%. Note that only one state in the 2007-2009 timeframe, Colorado, is in the blue range. Today our statistically thinnest state has a 19.1% obesity rate among adults, combined obese and overweight is 55.6%. Our fattest, Mississippi (which was also in the bulging ranks in twenty years ago) has an obesity rate of 33.8%, and a combined rate of 68.6%. http://www.treehugger.com/files/2010...st-in-2009.php |

As more and more people have less money food becomes expensive. Cheaper foods are higher in fat and calories which is probably why the obesity rate is going up. Are you really going to buy $12 of fruit and veggies to serve the family when for that you can feed 4 ppl at McDonalds for the same price?

I believe it...it seems to be more "acceptable" to be over weight now than it was before.

I grew up with a single mom, teacher, two kids, no child support... Chicken on the bone, green beans, and day old bread was on the table 3 or 4 times a week. My mother never took a hand out a day in her life even though she could have qualified for it. She was a budgeting master, lol...

i was more or less going off this statement...not the laziness factor. to me driving to mcdonalds would take longer than opening my fridge and plugging in my grille.

I have a lot of canned fruits and vegetables. Very affordable. Easy as pie. People simply choose to eat like garbage. I do not buy the "good food is too expensive" argument. It's more like "I do not want to make the time to make good food." And reality is... it really doesn't take that much time. 30 minutes and you can create a healthy, inexpensive meal for your family from raw foods and even create leftovers for quick meals later. 30 minutes. That's all it takes. Get the kids involved and cleanup takes no time at all You can easily spend 15-20 minutes jumping in the car and driving off to McDonald's.

alot of the innercities don't have the walmart or kroger type stores. and people are stuck going to the local mom and pop/liquor stores. They need to demolish these abandoned houses and set up community gardens

I think community gardens are a great idea. Easy way for the neighborhood to make a little money (they can charge small fees for maintenance and whatnot), make the neighborhood look nicer, get people out and active growing their own produce and working together.

The main problem is who most Americans don't know how to cook. Growing up all my friends moms cooked like crap. I remember a friend of mine had pasta with pesto sauce one night. The pesto sauce came from a powder packet you mix with I think milk. Jesus, pesto is the easiest sauce to make. That stuff he ate was filled with god knows how many preservatives and crap. You take some basil, throw it in a blender with some oil, blend it and bam you have fresh pesto sauce. Make a bunch extra and store it in the freezer. It's just 2 ingredients you blend. It's not hard. I'm no gourmet cook by any stretch of the imagination and I definitely don't know how to cook that many different things. But the few things I do cook, I cook well. And I'm a lazy ass that doesn't spend more than 15-30 minutes cooking. The pesto meal I described would only take the 10 minutes to cook the pasta if you all ready have the pesto made. |

doesnt surprise me. fast food is the new dinner menu and people facing hardship have to turn to cheaper meals, rather than spending the money on healthier options.
plus, id believe that more people are working now and dont have time for exercise like they did almost 20 years ago.

I was just talking about this with someone about 2 weeks ago. In my travels I always got the impression Illinois was the heaviest state. Chicago, for a major city, has a lot of heafty people. The guy I was talking with said no way, Mississippi is home of the 3X T-shirt for sure. Surprised how dead on he was. I've never been to Mississippi, but I guess it must be pretty noticible.

Here is my take: - Laziness and lack of money and are related. - Laziness and lack of exercise are related. - Laziness and lack of good food choices are related. Therefore, lazy thinkers (hint hint) relate lack of money with lack of good food choices. But the root of it is that fat people...are lazy. Apply exceptions as required to justify this theory.

Who the fuck cares?
The economy's sinking like a stone, the gulf of mexico is being transformed into a dead zone, tube sites are destroying our industry and you folks are getting all worked up over nonsense like this. Worry about your own waistlines and don't lose any sleep worrying about other people's potbellies ![]() Besides, it's only a matter of time before one of the pharmaceutical companies comes up with a pill that'll (more of less) safely speed up peoples metabolisms.

As has already been mentioned in this thread, if you're lazy, you're lazy. There isn't much that can be done about that.. *I* am lazier than I should be, but (as DXPhil pointed out) I'm still capable of using a George Foreman grill (and a stove too).. Stop watching TV all day.. and actually DO something.. thats all it takes.. |
