Google Launches Their Own DNS Service

http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2009/...ublic-dns.html

I'm personally sticking with OpenDNS for the time being but this is interesting.

OK, fuck it, I'm going into beta test mode - that is too damn nuts...

its 90ms for me from my house in socal, so no point in using! 90ms will make it slower than my ISP's or Verizons (4.2.2.2 and 4.2.2.1)

Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 23ms, Maximum = 27ms, Average = 25ms

pretty damn fast

They could be doing something unorthodox like routing the same IP block to multiple destinations. BGP routing will generally prefer the fewest hops.

BTW, Mountain View CA is just the administrative address for that block - doesn't mean that traffic necessarily terminates there.

Put it back on, I think there's more to it than just a better search algorithm...

Google's accelerator was a bit of a half-assed flop, DNS is much more simple for the average person to change... and once it's done they'll probably just forget that G is seeing every new site they're connecting to.

You can bet that future installs of Chrome are going to politely ask if you'd like to switch your DNS to Google.

Nah, its not that fast... they just advertise the same IP address in multiple places...

That same ip address can be in France, USA, australia, etc.
