should i be charged to get a check re-issued?

First time ever have i needed a check reissued due to have a motorcycle crash.

So in this case i was unable to goto bank to cash it. I have never done this before and need opinions on whether $40 dollars is the rate to get a check re-issued / sent

the company that issued the check is going to charge you 40.00 to send a replacement?

40$ is a bit much, but I don't see it being unreasonable to be charged. Even though you have a legitimate excuse for needing the check re-issued. They still have to put a stop payment on the check and that will cost them 5 to 20$ depending on their bank.

Unfortunately, there are charges associated with a stop payment, although $40 seems a little steep, combining bank fees and the in-house costs I can see how it could possibly come close to that.

How old is the check? Is it so old it could not be cashed even if you wanted? In that case, there is no need for a stop payment.

Well, the company does have to cancel the original which can be $20.00 or so. I guess it all depends on your relationship with the company and reason for needing it reissued.

I had to get Nasty Dollars to reissue a check once due to me making a typo with the "check payable to" details. As long as I sent it back they reissued it free but told me if I couldn't send it back it would cost them a $30 stop payment free which they would pass on to me... which was fair enough as it was my mistake.

the check of is from late 07, on the check it says not valid after 12months. So i assumed it has stopped, as my bank will not accept it.

That is a great point. If you can send them the old check then the fee should not be more than $10, IMHO.

So, who is the company?

CCBill charged me $35 cuz I wanted to be paid via Wire transfer and did not get my data over on time.

I just accepted it as it was ... but found it to be a little pricey for my taste/

I believe a check becomes stale dated after 180 days, which is six months. It may be a year.

One thing that sucks about banks is that they are not required to honor signing/endorsement statements like "check not valid after 90 days." Their terms usually say that they will try to honor it, but that they are under no obligation to do so. We can thank automation for that gift. Back in the day when it was people clearing checks stuff like that was never an issue.

Have you tried talking to the issuing company? Maybe they can waive the fee in light of your circumstances.

Our bank charges us $45 for stop payment. We never have a problem with an affiliate mailing us the check back and re-issuing one at no charge. I'm sure the company you're dealing with will be more than happy to do the same.

$40 seems steep. That's usually the rate if they know very little about the check. If you know the check number, amount, date, etc. the rate should come down to about $10-15.

It should be around $25 bucks but you should be responsible for that cost. $40 is pretty high they are taking some money for their time I guess.
