What happens if the power supply dies and takes out all of the drives? Backups should be in a separate server, preferably in a separate location...

most servers do it for free. A good option is to add a disk to your server to make daily backups and then rent a very cheap VPS and have the backup sent to it on a regular basis like once a week or so, so you'll have 2 backups in different locations

i know NatNet's great - i'm not moving though. i just posted to see how backups are billed by other hosting companies. i've never had all that much content on a server so i never paid much attention to how much backups cost.

you also have to take into consideration what kind of backs are being taken. disk to tape, disk to disk, so on so forth. Is it being compressed and being sent offsite...the whole reason for backup is for disaster recovery. If you are getting backups, but have no idea or way to recover it in a timely fashion. It is basically worthless. Backups are not really created for harddrive failure. There is no way you should have your data on a server that doesnt have raid with hot swaping drives. Also. If your data has any importance to you. You should have it on shared storage. Not on local disk. Local disk is for operating systems. I can go much deeper into disaster recovery and best practices on server setups. It seems it is not taken seriously in adult for the most part though.

1. RAID1 for availability, so a drive failure won't knock out your server. At the worst you'll be down for 30 mins while they power off and replace the drive; if you have a hotswap bay then you won't be down at all.

2. Backups for disaster recovery where something drastic such as a fried PSU or RAID card firmware has taken out the data on your server.

Backups are a bit like insurance... you realise you need them right after something bad happens, or if you do have insurance sometimes the claim is rejected (the host "lost" the backup or it was "corrupt"). Either way you'll be paying for it.
