Anyone have a Schlage LiNK?

Just saw a commercial for the iPhone app and blew my mind - http://link.schlage.com/Products/Pages/Products.aspx

You can add a dead bolt, door knob, camera, electrical outlets and thermostat... all controlled over the internet or smart phone

I'm seriously considering going to pick this up tomorrow morning at Lowes. I hate going out and worrying about loosing my keys, and I'm always working when I have a friend come to the door and this would be perfect to unlock the door for them.

On my front door, if you dont lock the dead bolt, the door can open as the lock on the knob doesnt line up exactly (I rent an apt). Ive had it happen and my cat got out twice.

Thermostat Im not really worried about, but controlling lights would be cool too, and beign able to pull up in my car, unlock the doors with my phone so I dont have to put down bags of groceries to pull out my keys would be amazing!

I think they try to charge you $12.99 a month for that. I am currently researching this stuff and already have some z-wave items purchased.

I have a touchscreen setup on the wall and I am going to use it to control all my lighting. Still waiting on my USB thinkstick which is what will allow the PC to control the z-wave devices. (right now I just use a handheld remote)

I figure once I have everything up and running, I will just use logmein.com to remotely access my computer running the zwave stuff. Sure beats paying Schlage 12.99 a month. You have to make sure you purchase the right software / hardware though, as the Schlage locks are not totally compatible with the older zwave stuff.

Where can I read more about this? If I could control everything like that from my computer I would pee my pants.

zwaveworld.com, controlthink.com (their forums)., search for z-wave on avsforum.com

Basically you just replace your light switches / receptacles with the zwave enabled switches, and then you can use either a handheld remote and / or a computer with zwave usb adapter to control all your stuff, setup scenes, run stuff on timers, etc.

I'm going to buy motion sensors too, so that I can just walk in the shitter and have the lights turn on automatically, and stuff like that. You can set how long you want the lights to stay on.

The shit is addictive once you start tinkering with it.

Here's a very basic setup using the thinkessentials program.

You can buy higher end software too, like homeseer, which lets you do all sorts of other home automation stuff, like voice commands, etc.

Do they let you change the locks in apartments? I saw the commercial too. Looks badass if it works

$12.99 a month kinda blows, but being able to control everything from my iPhone is worth it IMO. In the past ive looked into a lot of home automation stuff and nothing really worked out to well.

I bought some stuff from x10.com (or whatever that site is) and blows. I have an RF remote that is supposed to control all of that (logitech 900) but doesnt because they use some other frequency.

Im not as concerned about using the PC as I am my iPhone or remote control. My old apt in LA was sick. I spent a LOT of time and money hooking that place up. I had 6 network cameras (1 pointing outside, 1 at the bedroom window outside, 1 at the front door in the hallway, 1 in the garage and 2 in the house for security when I was gone) and had this crazy lighting setup where I got motion sensors and attached them to some dim lighting so at night when i had to pee or get a drink, i would have some light without turning on a switch... i really miss that place

Don't get pissed, just think outside the damn box. What you do is you contact your landlord and, as a broker, offer them the technology for any or all of their tenants that want it. It's obviously going to become the standard in the coming years, if they're smart they'll get on this now.

And if they are a property management firm maybe they'd be interested in offering it to their tenants in their other rental properties. Charge them no markup on hardware, only consulting fees (and of course free rent).

Once they're on board you then get your ass back here and thank me. (% is always nice)

This is the ONLY pearl I will cast before swine in 2010.

CD out.
