Lookin' for a job transfer - web development
I've been a web developer at the Florida Institute of Technology for the past 2.5 years. Prior to being hired full-time on salary I freelanced in the adult world for 4.5 years.
All has been good here, but I've began to feel like this place is backing me into a corner. With no room for advancement. There are only two web developer's here @ F.I.T. including myself. We have built many systems such as:
To make a long story short, we lost our graphics designer over 6 months ago and everything being produced here looks like shit. He did not like working here, and the university has shown no interest in hiring a new person until last week - when our other web developer placed his 2 week notice. Our "webmaster" doesn't know how to code or manage projects and sends me out to do all of the consultations with clients. We developed a new home page that has been ready to go live for the past 4 months. located here: http://web-demos.fit.edu/redesign/prototypes/2.3.5/ However, the politics are so bad here it will probably never get launched. I'm sick and tired of building things that never get used and I'm over looking at the horrible existing website. The whole redesign is turning into a "design by committee" project. Shots are being called and demanded by people who care nothing about usability. I'm tired of dealing with all the politics and working with school content. I don't foresee the need for any new major system on campus in the future and can't see myself here doing trivial tasks such as fixing broken links, client consults, etc. The university has no budget for web which means I can't attend conferences, workshops, or anything to help further myself as a web developer. I'm extremely over worked for the pay. My current salary is only $36,000 per year, but I was hired without a college degree, which I now hold. They haven't even mentioned a pay raise to me and I've asked about it multiple times. I was told $42,000 once I obtained my degree. Educational benefits are really all this place has going, but I'm willing to quit and work from the house remotely for $750 per week, but I'd even consider $600 - with absolutely no benefits, but I'd request weekly pay. Anyways, sorry for the short version of what really is a much longer rant. If anyone knows of a good opportunity please drop me a line. I can provide more details about my education and skills set upon inquiry. One of my first gigs in adult was with Choker Media LLC. You can visit chickenboard.com to see I was a moderator and worked on the Turbo Traffic Trader project. AIM: calmdev Email: [email protected] Thanks

If you're willing to commute /move into Orlando checkout http://www.mindcomet.com
That is, if you're looking to do work in mainstream and you want to flesh out your portfolio over the next X years... They do a lot of really high profile sites. Let me know if you're interested and I can drop your name off to some friends over there and at least make sure your resume gets seen ;) Good luck!

@ScriptWorkz, that sounds good to me.
@babaganoosh, you're not joking. I've been so tempted and have found some very interesting things in some old web pages to say the least. For example, affiliate URLs to financial aid websites! lol..

Grats on getting your degree man, I know it is not easy doing it on your own.
I can dig it, though - finally got that fucker nailed down and now it's doing nothing for you inasfar as helping your career. Good luck - remember you're a big fish in a little pond - Florida and its people have a way of helping people to forget that about themselves when they actually have/ can provide something of worth.

Agreed he is a good coder, but he has bailed on a project we worked on for many months, and ended up selling the code to a 3rd party.
And pretty much blocked me on all messengers. http://www.gfy.com/showthread.php?t=...hlight=calmdev http://www.gfy.com/showthread.php?t=...hlight=calmdev As for working with other coders like Scriptworkz, and Basic Man, they had no issues working with me and I pay top dollar. Just want to make other people aware of this pattern.

The situation with fris is likely just some misunderstanding, but I would work out something with him, you aren't going to get far around here when you have people screaming "scammer" wherever you show up...
but either way, here is a bump for you, good luck

That's just how business works. For every 100 happy clients there is one who is completely unhappy. You're always more likely to find those who are unhappy boasting there opinions and slandering someone on a forum.
It's like buying a car. You don't go around the internet telling people how much you love to drive it, but if you have issues you'll try to spread the word. With fris you'll find plenty of threads where he praises my skills and suggests me to others, but now he is sour because of a business that went south between the two of his. His presents doesn't effect my ability to do business. GFY isn't the only community that I'm part of. He'll probably never get over it, because he missed out on a lot of extra money when I turned him away. This is just his personality though. I think everyone here knows that.

My girlfriend works in a department on a large university doing pretty much all you described.
At the moment though, they are on a hiring freeze. Even contractors are getting little work even though they are swamped with it. This school probably has a billion dollar endowment and it's one everyone has heard of. I will pass this info along and cross my fingers for you. If they're willing to make you an offer, than means that the contractor jobs will start coming more often |
