Best rock guitar riff ever?

Not the best solo or the best player, but the best riff in rock music. Not the technical best, but the one that just rocks or brings a smile to your face and you hum it every time you hear it.

Examples:

Jimmy Hendrix- Purple haze
Eagles - Life in the fast lane
Kansas - Carry on my wayward son
Ozzie Osborn - Crazy train
Deep Purple - Smoke on the water
Van Halen - Aint talkin' 'bout love
ZZ Top - Tush
George Thorogood - Bad to the bone
Led Zepplin - (pretty much everything)

One of the first for me was hearing the Van Halen "jump" solo. Had never seen anyone or heard anyone tapping the neck before, was mad at the time.

Not a classic riff by any means, but the opening riff in Muse 'Plugin Baby' has to be one of the best I've heard.

not bad though i think jimmys hey joe is a better solo then purple haze and van halen how can you compare any of his solos to eruption???

I think of the other bands songs you missed -

Metallica - pretty much all of their solos
GnR _ again pretty much all of slash solo rock!!

A riff is not a solo. A riff is a guitar hook (usually only a few notes) that makes the song work. A solo is played in the middle of a song and is (usually) little more than the guitarist masturbating.

Cream had some great riffs. Sunshine of your love, Cocaine, etc.

Smoke on the Water has to win though. imho. First riff I played on the guitar!

The solo in Hotel California will live forever as the best guitar solo ever created. Even my wife can hum it from memory.

This thread needs some Eddie Cochrane:

and Jimmy Page's favorite song:

I think this song was actually the only instrumental song that has ever been banned from radio.

One of my favorite riffs, it's more metal than rock, but still classic -

Hard to say, a lot come to mind right now "Satisfaction - Stones" and "Blitzkrieg Bop - Ramones" are very popular but I think "Smoke On The Water", "Sunshine Of Your Love" and probably "Love Removal Machine" from The Cult are my top 3.

The way a guitar riff should be like... haunting.

thanks for explaining that, although I'm more than certain that a few dozen posts later people will still be writing their favorite solos in this thread...
