This should be interesting, How many of you...

had a Paper Route job as a kid?

I had one, my brother had one. I had a sidecar on my bike, so we would team up, I would ride the bike and my brother would toss the paper. I used to come home from school and then do my route. But now that I think of it, don't most people like their daily news in the Morning.

It was fun, I think I used to make around 25 bucks a month, also mowed a couple lawns for about 5 bucks a pop, washed a few cars a month, 3 bucks a pop.

Making about 40 Bucks a month would be a good month.

The good ol days.

I made way more cleaning driveways in winter and cutting grass/yard work in summer then any of my friends with a paper route. And to top it I did not have to wake up at 5:30 - 6:00

My parents wouldn't "let" me get small jobs as a kid, because I was supposed to be spending every waking moment doing chores or homework. My first income was from designing websites at 15.

My friend on my street did. He just threw the papers in the garbage at the park and went around "collecting" and put the cash in his pocket. Took a whole month before he got fired.

Now that I think about it, he should probably be the one working in adult.

hah, i've got a pretty good scar from a bike spill while delivering papers. my big childhood biz was a pool cleaning business. started with the pools on my block and worked my way out several blocks.

I didnt need to have one to get the experience, because 2 of my older brothers had them. Everytime they were sick or something, I had to go deliver while mom drove and prodded me back awake. Drafted.

I had one and delivered on my bike. I didn't mind it and actually had fun throwing the paper on the door step. Some throws required an arc to the right or left to get around obstacles and I liked the challenge. Sometimes you can use the door as a backboard and sometimes you can slide one in on a large front porch. The goal was to get it right under the door and if the throw was off I'd set it there manually.

What sucked was the Newspaper made me collect the money from the customers and if the customer didn't pay I didn't get paid.

Rough way for a thirteen year old to make some spending money in Miami in the late 60s

for sure, started at 13. but magazines, not newspapers. and i had to collect the money from the subscribers which made it sometimes a bit tireing when they were not at home and i had to come back the next day.

but i also had a bunch of soft erotic magazines to deliver and of course i had to "study" them first before my clients got them

Yeah, I did all the normal kid-worker stuff... paper route, shoveled houses after snow storms, mowed lawns, raked leaves, had a lemonade stand, caddied... you name it!

Nothing like today's digital couch potatoes. Likely why obesity and diabetes are so high among kids now. This is Michelle Obama's main mission - to help kids get moving and eating right again.

Beginning at age 14 I did farm work during the summer and what ever yard work and car washing was available the remainder of the year...until I was 16. At the age of 16 I went to work at a gas station and worked there part time...after school hours and weekends...until I graduated High School.

Yep, I had a paper route.

When I took the route over from a buddy that took ill, he had 30 customers, I built it up to around a 100 customers.....Sunday's route totally kicked my ass because the Sunday edition was always bigger, harder to toss and I would have to make a few trips back to my drop point to reload...

I delivered Old Town Scottsdale before all the changes ;)

Does a rural paper route count?
As an adult, I helped a cousin of mine a few yrs back. Started at 10-11PM and went til dawn covered maybe 20 sq miles. I would consider it one of the worst jobs ever. I was not dependent on it for my living expenses, just something to do as he needed dependable transportation so I helped out for a few weeks.

I did have a great summer when I was 16, I spent the entire summer in my garage running a lathe making Harley Davidson Valve Guides for knuckle heads, My step dad was a machinist, I made some serious bank that summer. I paid for the new motor in my first car, 1967 Baracuda fast back

I never got the whole paper route thing because where I grew up it was always 35 year old people delivering papers in their cars at 4:30 AM. There was no such thing as a paper boy on a bike ... I always figured that was a Hollywood myth.

Come to think of it, everybody cut their own grass, too.

There were no real job opportunities until you turned 14, got your work permit and became a bus boy. No other type of job usually opened up to you until you were 16 when the work permit became less restrictive.

Hell yeah I had a paper route. Used to deliver the San Diego Union Tribune in the afternoon. Had 70 customers. Can't remember how much I made, but it wasn't much. I actually had to buy the papers from the Tribune every month, any money after that was mine.

Now a days they have adults delivering the papers, no more kids.

had a great route delivering the NY Daily News. Every morning before school. 7 days a week. hooked up a couple of milk carton baskets on the bike and hit the road. My route was pretty big and had to do 2 trips but I made great money for the time. Bought my first electric guitar and amp.
