Your Thoughts on --- Google's "Auto" cars

So, with the testing taking place and the success they are having with it, do you think it will be the next big thing in the automotive industry? do you like the idea of having the cars drive for you?, do you think it will fail and never happen?, do you want one right now or do you want to wait X amount of years to assure your not going to die?

I am not sure what was the average speed and what methods have been used to stay on track. Hard to tell, but i definitely think it's not safe yet.

Personally i like the idea to just get in, say loudly; to home.

But I feel it will take like 10-15 years to be a reality. Atleast..

In truth, I'd prefer a flying car. Even with automated cars increasing efficiency on the roads, traffic in most major cities is and would remain near unbearable for me. Obviously I understand the main limitation with flying cars is fuel consumption.

That said, automated cars sound great. Google would be one of the few companies I'd trust to do it right. They don't always make stuff look pretty, but they do have the people capable of taking on significant technical challenges so lets hope. A lot of companies seem happy to make money off mediocre improvements now days, so it's good to see some pushing the envelope.

I trust a robot driver more then some random human driver.
But this will never happen on Government roads.

I think it's a neat idea and would be beautiful for those long car rides, whereas you could just kick back and relax, playing around on your laptop or watch a movie, it'd sure break up the trip for the person that usually has to drive.

Only if EVERYONE used them...otherwise I just don't think I could trust Google's automated cars to take into account other assholes on the road that can't drive more than I can. Defensive driving easily saves me from over a dozen accidents a year.

well put... if the car is equipped with cameras and someone swerves into my lane, is my car going to swerve into the opposite position and if so, does the car fly when i fall off the cliff?

Excellent point. There's too many mountain roads (ie West Virginia, Tennessee, NC, etc) to be just chillin in a car shooting off emails when you have a semi coming around a mountain bend too fast, your car reacts and automatically kills you. [side note: it almost happened to me while heading to the BLue Ridge parkway for a bypass on my vacation in July]

But on the same token, if all our cars were automatic like this I wouldn't have to stress every time I go out due to the fact that it seems women in SUV's yapping their fucking heads off on a cell phone can't seem to see my 17 foot long white monte carlo... Hell I think I avoid about 30 accidents a year, almost 3 a month, because of that one reason alone.

I don't think we will see that among regular cars. Maybe in a sci-fi future, we can only imagine.

Kind of reminds me of the cars on the movie Demolition Man... Not as advanced of course, but similar in the way that they are self driven.

I very much enjoy the act of driving. But it would be fun to hotbox while going 70mph down the highway. It would cut down on accidents, tickets, and DUI's, so less money for the government...

And what about intersections and stop signs?

one would think that we would need seperate roads. 1 road for manual cars, 1 road for automated cars.
