Veggies I only do a couple times a week and I toss them some while cooking dinner (they think they're getting food we're fixing to eat). I made some sweet potato fries the other night and was tossing them raw potato, they loved it.

No Problem. We feed them chicken, turkey, red meat, pork (freeze for 24 hours first), beef heart, gizzards, liver etc. They eat better than us most nights! They also tend to drink less water now too.

I have to ask, why would you feed veggies to a dog? Just because they will eat it does not mean they should.

a. All dogs should be fed, by volume of the total amount fed each meal, 25-50% meat b. The meat can include: i. Beef ii. Chicken iii. Turkey iv. Fish the remainder: b. Vegetables should be routinely added. We recommend: i. Carrots ii. Broccoli iii. Peas iv. Leafy greens c. Sweet potatoes, pumpkin, yams, and squashes are all excellent additions to the diet. Sweet potato is especially good, inexpensive, easy to prepare, and readily accepted. Sweet potato should be cooked, and can then be used a portion at a time over a few days. They can be mashed and mixed so well into the diet that all animals will accept them. Carrots often need to be cooked lightly or shredded/chopped finely, or they may not be accepted or completely digested. d. Dairy products can be included sparingly. Our favorites are: i. Yogurt ii. Cottage Cheese e. Eggs are great to feed, and can be fed cooked or raw. We recommend no more than a couple of eggs a week, if fed raw. Cooked eggs can be fed a little more frequently. f. Leftovers can be fed as well, as long as they are good food and not excessively fatty or sweet. g. The variety component should be just that: fed for variety, one thing one day, and another thing another day. Don't get caught up in a routine where you are feeding the same things all the time. Variety is just as necessary for your dog as it is for yourself. h. A couple final thoughts: |

im going by what they eat in the wild.. its been proven over and over that they dont eat the contents of their prey..
dogs are meant to digest animal protein/organs very well... yogurt has sugar, dairy sugar... they dont have enzymes to break down fibrous carbs from vegetables that well.. i'll just stick to raw meat/organs/eggs.. my gf has cats that r both 5 yrs old.. all been fed natures variety raw meat from day 1.. never been sick.. no vet bills.. no health condition.. perfect fur.. energy.... just like my little 5 month old monster

Great to hear, Dyna Mo!
For raw chicken bone worries: the bigger the piece, the better. Try giving your pooch an entire fryer chicken to gnaw on. Watch closely how he handles it. It should stop him from gulping too fast. If he really is a gulper, you can still give him bones, just invest in a good cleaver to chop them into 1" long sections of leg or wing. They'll digest fine, you just want to avoid something getting caught in the throat. organ meat: should make up about 10% of the weekly diet by weight. You can get this super cheap. Remember heart is a muscle, not an organ! Organ is kidney, liver, that kind of thing. Too much organ in one meal CAN give poochy the runs, as it's very rich. Supplements: I give 1 1000mg capsule a day of salmon oil for omega 3's. Because of this, she gets 2 small vitamin e capsules a day (one at each meal). THe vitamin e helps digest the omega 3s and boosts the immune system. Your dog will be SUPER shiny ![]() Veggies: the jury is still out. Some people insist, some people say they're not needed. I throw in some leftover veg when there's some in the fridge, but I don't stress it. Carrots and bananas are great as training treats! greek-style yogurt: 1 spoon at every breakfast is my rule of thumb. eggs: 1 raw egg once a week or so. If she's outside, she gets it in the shell. If she needs the calcium (due to not enough bone in the diet) then she'll eat the shell, too. NO: ONIONS, GRAPES, RAISINS. be careful when feeding raw fish: tuna and whitefish are fine. Salmon carry parasites and the fish MUST be frozen before feeding raw to the dog. Freezer burnt meat? No longer a waste! You have your own garbage disposal looking at you longingly right now. ![]()

But then again man the veggies/fruits cant be that bad.. not as bad as dry food which is byproducts + too much carbs/sugar..

![]() I give my dogs uncooked eggs in the shell a few times a week. They play with the eggs until the shells break and then they lapup the egg and chew the shells unless they just swallow them whole! I make a monthly run to a local slaughter house where I pick up a about a hundred pounds of beef, deer and bison bones along with fifty or so pounds of fat stripped from the carcasses. I freeze it and give them each a bone a day along with a few pieces of the fat. I back this up with high quality dry dog food and occasional treats. Two of the dogs like raw potatoes but the others turn up their noses at anything that even looks like a veggie. If I pick up a hundred lbs of bones, there is about 30 lbs of meat still on them so the dogs love it!
I am also on the list at the Sheriif's Office to be notified of deer which have been hit by cars on the roads. If the dead deer are not too torn up, we sometimes go get one and then dress it out into deer steaks and big chunks of meat for the dogs. This area is overrun with Whitetail deer, so a lot of them get hit. |
