Cases are supposed to go up as we open. The virus is here to stay but we act like it's supposed to go away after lockdown which is not how it works. There is nothing wrong with cases going up, it's about what we can handle. We either get infected now at manageable levels, or stay locked down and keep numbers low, ruin the economy only to get infected anyway at a later time.

Masks do offer some protection. Doctors wear them because they are exposed to a huge viral load and so they need it more than anyone else. Even still, the nursing home down the street had 20 nurses wearing full gear and changing it every hour and all still got infected. Most were asymptomatic. All of the residents got infected too and most were asymptomatic. The point is that the virus will get us all with most of us not getting sick, front line workers manage the levels which is why it;s important for them to wear masks.

This isn't about masks or no masks,. That's just isolating one factor from a whole. We are going about this all wrong.

You may be correct but people don't want to hear that many may suffer and die due to lock down. They simply filter that and you can't even have a reasonable conversation with them. They are focused on Corona and nothing else matters. it's sad really.

Most newspapers are just going along with what governments say. Our government was asked which doctors were in charge and their "team" was one doctor and 3 medical administration staff. Not even doctors?

Again, nobody wants to have an honest discussion. This is how I know it's political and not reasonable.

Hospitals are always full and overflowing during flu season. Nobody cared about that before. Suddenly, it's the most important thing.

Also, the flu killed 80,000 in the US a couple of years ago. Nobody cared, nobody knew, the news didn't report a thing. Suddenly, it's important now.

It's nice that you are genuinely thinking of others welfare and not PRETENDING to think of others welfare to push your narrative. Yes, I was shocked when India locked down. I know that millions there get paid daily and use that money to feed their families. When the lock down started, many were starving for days until aid came. Not fun. Oh, and Tuberculosis will now spread again to millions thanks to the lock down (look it up) and kill perhaps 1.4 million.

Again, nobody cares. Only Corona matters.

The biggest shock to me throughout this is how asleep most people are. It is like those movies where you wake up the world is all zombies. The media, governments, neighbors, family, all asleep and willingly so. That's the scariest thing to me.

I don't wear a mask and don't believe that "most" of us need to.

It's anxiety that is running people's decisions - as it usually does.

Imagine if the media reported each and every influenza death and infection each flu season? You'd see a lot more people huddled in their homes, more government intervention (as we plead for them to make us feel better) and more outrage.

Anxiety and politics is running the show now. Not logic.

We need to open up faster.

Again, this is NOT the flu! All your comparisons - made solely to make you feel better and reduce your own anxiety - are meaningless. Yes people die from the flu but we have vaccines for the flu so MORE people do not die. Corona? No vaccine (yet). No natural immunity (as many have with the flu). No, this is different and much, much more dangerous.

80,000 flu deaths in a year? How about more than 120,000 in three months??? NO it's not the flu. And crunching numbers trying to figure out the odds of YOU catching it is where people are fucking up. We had a chance in the USA to crush this virus, as many other countries have done, but nope. We idiotic Americans continue to debate whether wearing a mask is good, right, healthy, etc while our Covid-19 cases skyrocket and yet people like yourself continue to debunk the science. Amazing.

This is the fallacy or trap that we have all fallen into.

There is no crushing the virus. It is here to stay and will be part of the seasonal viruses that come through every year. It HAS to go through us and so we have to let it by allowing the healthy to resume life as per normal while protecting the vulnerable.

New Zealand apparently crushed the virus. Sure. But now what? They have trapped themselves. They can't open their borders until a vaccine is found, IF a vaccine is found that works in time. So they will sit there, while their economy degrades (tourism is 10%) and will eventually have no choice but to open up and let the virus back in, after a substantial loss to their economy and livelihood.

If we could crush the virus that would be great. But it doesn't work like that and we are going about this wrong, making it worse for us all in the long run.

Sad thing is, there are some really good people who are just not thinking clearly on this issue and that saddens me.

I wear a mask whenever I go into a building (other than my house). I'll take the expert advice of public health officials and epidemiologists over anyone else. It seems to be working well here in Ontario with almost everyone wearing them. Cases are down, deaths are down and much of the Province is returning to normal.

Not even close. There are many scientists who agree. I feel masks may offer some protection.

Cases are going up there too. Spain is locking down areas once again. Any country that opens up will have cases go up. That is how it works.

There is no such thing as "crushing" the virus.

Then let me ask you. If there is a chance that the mask can help reduce the spread and get us back to normal sooner, why not wear it?
