It can be difficult to get off them once you start, so it would be best to avoid them completely
"You should NEVER stop taking proton pump inhibitors cold turkey. You have to wean yourself off them gradually or else you?ll experience a severe rebound of your symptoms, and the problem may end up being worse than before you started taking the medication. from the sounds of it, you have made permanent damage to your esophagus which is why they are sticking a camera down your throat..
for prevention: you guys are forgetting the most important stuff: 1. Exercise 2. Drink lots of water 3. Get lots of sleep (no more 5 - 6 hours per night) sure diet makes a small difference also, ESPECIALLY taking drugs such as motrin or cialis/viagra. I found for immediate relief Zantac (Ranitidine) works very well but I have never taken it for more than one or two days.

I used to have acid reflux. Put myself on a raw food diet for a few months, lost weight and the acid reflux never returned . . . that has to be at least 5 years now.

I can tell you from having this for over 5 years, its no fun. Everyone has answers when it comes to something medical but unless you have it yourself, then you can't talk.
First, don't eat a lot of carbs, sugary crap and beer. Eat white breads and simple carbs, complex carbs and wheat will destroy you. Ive taken Nexium, that worked great for a while but needed something stronger because I am an idiot and didn't take care of myself. Pasta sauce is a killer... Fats help out a lot! I was on the Keto diet for about a month and never had a problem, including eating HOT wings 3x a week. You can change a lot around your diet to help but meds also help too. Good luck man ![]()

I was diagnosed with it a little over a year ago and it sucks big time. I started out on the over the counter prilosec and then was moved to prescription meds which was nexum and protonix. They are very costly and neither one really helps much. I also take a pepcid daily and have to use tums like they are candy.
The tests that they due usually depend on how bad your symptoms are. The first one will require you to drink a white chalky substance and then they will x-ray your stomach to see if the liquid stays down or comes back up. This is the Barium swallow. The second one is where they put a tube down your throat into your stomach to actually view the acid to see how bad it is. The last one is where they run a tube down your nose to your stomach and you actually go home with it for like 24 hours. This is another way to allow them to test your daily acid. Super uncomfortable. My stomach is actually super bad because for years I didn't eat right and I also have no gallbladder which doesn't help things. I have to have surgery on it which sucks and I am not looking forward to. However, those who have severe acid reflux which goes untreated can actually cause cancer. Things that you can do to help with it aside from the antacids is: Avoid sleeping flat Avoid spicy foods (pizza, barbeque, etc) Greasy foods or fried foods Tons of acidy foods or drinks Avoid coffee, soda, chocolate If you are overweight or have an extra pudge work on losing it. Smoking and drinking can irritate it big time. I was told not to use Advil or Aleve for pain instead to use Tylenol because these meds can make it worse. One of the biggest things that I can advise is to eat 5 or more smaller meals throughout the day instead of 3 large meals. It allows you to eat enough to sustain until the next meal but not over eat. I actually stop eating before I feel full and it helps me from hurting at night. Hopefully you can get some type of relief.

Well I took the first pill around 5pm yesterday and slept better than I had been. And my throat feels great today so it looks like the script is working. I am going to a ENT to rule out throat cancer. My doc said I don't have cancer and am being paranoid, but it will not hurt to get it checked. I am 47 now and have to start getting checked for everything. Pretty much al lthe things you guys say cause this I am guilty of, so yeah I gotta change a lot of things, especially not eating a big meal right before bed.

oh they call it a disease so they can sell more pills and shit.
Strange how eating shitty food and drinking too much gives you acid reflux disease, but if you clean up your habits the disease is magically cured.

Yeah, after a while I could detect certain foods (mainly by smell.. don't ask me) that would exacerbate it. But regardless, I would always have attacks if I wasn't on a med. I also did the sleep on an incline thing. Yes, tums help, but those guys dont know if their stomach acid is eating them up inside while they sleep for example, or at levels low enough not to cause a lot of pain. I also tried many of the "quack" stuff like apple cider vinegar and never noticed a difference. I was on pariet, nexium, and did some research myself and asked for omeprazole (I think this is losec). That was about 1/3 the cost, and it worked just as well or better. So, my experience, much of the "lore" can seem to have an effect, but I've also heard many things spouted as facts that turned out to be completely false for my situation. This includes foods that they recommend to stay away from, or to switch to. So - tums, sure. Baking soda in water in a pinch. But take the medication and if it works you should be near symptom free. People in this thread making light don't understand what its like to constantly have fairly severe pain in your chest from this, nor to wake up hoarse or have constant sore throats that go on and on. An occasional bout of heartburn is not what this is about whatsoever. (And, by the way, I was horribly misdiagnosed on a related issue by several doctors and 2 specialists, and one of those specialists treated me like I was the idiot for asking too many questions and giving too much information.) The misdiagnosis wasnt life threatening but it resulted in countless ER visits and completely debilitating pain for about a year. So ABOVE ALL make sure that what you are told hangs together logically with what you experience, make sure everyone that tells you something has an explanation for why they think it applies to you, and above all be curious and trust your own thinking. |
