Married couples that met online - how long?

This Aug. my wife and I will have been married 15 years.

We met 18 years ago over a local BBS (pre-internet).

Any other 'online' couples with longevity?

Not sure if "how you met" has much to do with longevity of marriage. Does it matter if you met "the right person" at the book store, or at a car wash, or on the internet?

Met on Myspace 8 years ago. Never got married. Had three kids. Still together.

I have friends who've gotten together, engaged, married and then divorced in that short time.

I met mine (common law), Tracy, via one of the first "adult" BBS's that I ran over 26 years ago ("Datamate" in Montreal, first on a couple of TRS-80's, then on a PC clone). We've been together ever since.

Impressive - that's ground floor of the online scene.

Congrats on 26 years. These days, that's a remarkable achievement.

Naw, it doesn't matter. It was simply how my wife and I met - hence the thread topic.

Looking back, it was interesting from the perspective that her and I got to know one another through BBS message exchanges for several months before meeting IRL. And when we finally met one night in a local nightclub...it was as if we'd known each other a very long time. We clicked right away as friends - neither of us were really looking for a relationship. It just evolved over time.

And three years later we finally married.

It seems these days that I should be waiting for Prince Charming to arrive on an app. on a white tablet rather then a white horse. :/ Where did the ' normal' way to meet people go?

I think waiting to meet Prince Charming on a white horse became obsolete as we progressed from medieval times.

Times change...people evolve. Technology gives us new opportunities and different options.

Doesn't mean the old 'normal' ways are completely gone, though. Just...diversified.

If he was still alive, it would be 17 years this year. We made it to 8.

I guess I sort of met my current boyfriend online but briefly and years before I accidentally met him for real at an event. Not like the intense online courtship of my husband.

One of my best friends found her wife on orkut. The guy is hungarian, chick is brazilian, guy went to Sao Paolo after 6m of chat+phone, they got married, moved to Hanoi, Vietnam because of the work of the guy. Spent there 2 years than they came back to Hungary. The are not divorced but separated, raising the kid together but the chick fucks other guys. It seems to work somehow.

I can't imagine meeting someone on the web these days, though. I mean...back in the 'old' days...BBSing was mostly local. Most everyone lived in proximity to one another - making it much easier (and less costly) to meet up.

And maybe it's just me...but BBS people weren't quite as fake as a lot of people on the 'net. Sure, we had a few trolls and fake personnas - but they didn't seem as prevalent. We hosted a few BBS get-togethers back in the day...and with only a few exceptions, most everyone seemed the same IRL as their online personna.

the thing about online is you are no longer stuck having to choose from the people who happen to live around you. you can choose from people across the globe. i think this in part is what can give online relationships longevity.

Hmm, nowhere, they are all (or at least 99% of them) still there. Which "normal" way are you missing?

A friend of mine who is getting divorced met the current soon to be ex online. They talked a lot then then he came out here (they were from different states) and saw each other a couple of times before he finally moved out here full time.

They got married and it lasted about 4 years.

The problem was, well, he is a user. When she met him he had no job and told her it was just because he was recently laid off. She paid for him to come see her. Then he moved out here and they got married. It took him almost 2 years to get a job that he then quit after 6 months for some reason. He then tried to convince her that he should just be a house dad. The problem is they don't have any kids together and her 3 from a previous relationship are all grown. The youngest is 16. So by house dad he really means he should be able to stay home and play xbox all day.

Remember when meeting people online was considered so taboo and everyone warned you to be careful?

My oh my how things have changed.

The people I care most about, outside of family, all came about because of my online activity. Either directly or indirectly (like the friends of friends that I met online who became my own friends).

I'd read "recently laid off" - and see red flags...especially if the loser didn't even have enough money put together to travel to see her.

Too bad it took her so long to see him for the deadbeat he is.

Less than a decade ago it was still considered rather weird to meet people online and do something with them offline.

In the fetish niche - that'll never change.

What we do with people offline in-the-studio will always be considered 'rather weird'.

I get the feeling he is one of those guys who is just lazy and wants others to take care of him. His problem is that he is not good looking enough that he can just talk women into it so instead he has to find other ways.

Too bad it took her so long to see him for the deadbeat he is.
He he set his scam up with her pretty nicely (at least I believe it was a scam). He told her he was a machinist. Then when she suggested he fly out and meet her he told her he would love to, but he just got laid off and is short of cash. She tells him that she understands and offers to buy him the ticket. He promises to pay her back.

He comes out and sees her for a week. Things go really well so before he leaves they talk about him coming out permanently. He agrees and tells her once he gets settled he will get a job. She pays for him to move out.

Then the excuses came. It took him 2 years, but he finally got a job. It was a good job to with a union, good wages etc. It wasn't long before he started having problems with it. At first he told her it was very physically demanding and he was always worn out from it. Then he supposedly hurt his knees and was out a few months. Eventually he told her he just couldn't do it and quit. That is when he sprung the "house husband" stuff on her. He tried to tell her he would cook her dinner every night, clean, do all the laundry, shop etc. She didn't want any of that. She wanted him to get a job. That started the fighting. Eventually she shut off the X-box live account and took the x-box over to a friends. He was furious and a week later he left.

The funny thing was that she ended up paying for his move back to where he was from. He told her flat out he had nowhere to go and no money so if she didn't pay for it he would stay in the house and fight her trying to evict him. She realized then it was going to be cheaper and easier to pay for his move back.

You know, just being social, sitting in a bar, or something and people just come up to you and ask if they can buy you a drink - I am missing that 'normal'... I don't see it these days

I absolutely agree with that, and I am happy that I get to keep in touch with ppl all over the world - I guess I need to give the online dating another try - get used to it.
