Question about the Sopranos

I'm watching the Sopranos... Wouldn't the boss of a family have 24/7 protection?

Yes.
I'm watching it too I'm 1 disk into season 5. It seems a sub premise of the show is his battle between everyday life & a non traditional job. It wouldn't hold water if he were boarded up like scarface

In a word- no. I've read a lot of mafia non-fiction books over the years and none of them ever mention mafia bosses having regular professional- or even unprofessional- bodyguards around them 24/7 except in rare circumstances when there is an active "war" going on. Even then, it's just some tough guy in their crew.

You have to realize, most of these organized crime bosses are just street hoodlums with a bit of a hustle who have a bunch of like minded criminal friends and acquaintances around them kicking up money as tribute on schemes they run on their own. It's not like they think it through carefully and go hire former mercenaries or Israeli Secret Service trained experts to watch them day and night like a Fortune 100 CEO or Russian Oil Baron would.

I began watching when it originally aired. My gf & I broke up around the start of season 5. It's good to be able to remember much of it & still have more to go.

Yep, I also think alot them would of seen it as a sign of weakness to be surrounded by body guards. I worked in the NY bar business and later in the high car business. I was a service advisor for ten yrs for Mercedes, Roll Royce and Jaguar. So I met a few in my time, they were warm, funny and likable guys who were good tips. One guy was a boss in the Gotti crew and when he came in with his car, he came in alone.
