Cunning Negotiation Tactic or Delusion?
Thoughts please
![]() Let's make this story quick:- 1. Bought nice wheels with tyres at scrap yard 2. Didn't fit properly, scrap yard guy took a while to find replacements A Week Later 3. Went to collect wheels, scrapyard man acted like he had done me a big favor by taking the wheels of his own car, so now apparently his car has no wheels. 4. Asks me if he can have my current wheels once I've switched over, he didn't offer money for them, seemed to as good as assume he could have them. He's not getting the wheels I want them as spares, but what I find can't work out is if he thinks it's normal to be able to take my old wheels off me free of charge i.e. deluded, or he this is some kind of subtle negotiation tactic where you first start by seeing if you can get something for free, despite the fact you know that it's completely unreasonable? If I was in his shoes I would have made a fair offer if I wanted the wheels. Is he a) Deluded, b) a Cunning Fox or c) Something I haven't thought of yet?

It's a junkyard. In my experience, it's take it as it is. Seems like he went out of his way to help you out?

From my point of view I've purchased the wheels, so I find it strange that now he's acting like we're buddies and should be doing each other favors.

This is my own instinct, that he assumes I'm dumb enough to fall for this, but I would like to be sure of that. I've seen when others haggle with him, he's never once brought the price down, he doesn't budge.

Yes, for sure, saw it early on in my school days, there's a lot of it where I was brought up in a snobby Southern English town.

I bet the old wheels are something that normally has very little to no value to the average car owner once they get new ones, and it's something that does have value to him as he can resell them, use them etc. So surely a tactic to get something for himself. The story about his own car is likely to butter you up and make you feel guilty/compelled in some way.
If you want the wheels keep them, and just don't let his story affect you. However, if he has done work for you and you feel like you'd be ripping off his time, perhaps there's some other way to make it back up to him. I think a blowjob would square things away quite nicely. He probably won't even accept, so it's sort of a bluff play to save face on the guilt factor. |

![]() When he showed interest in the wheels, I was going to ask him to make an offer, but then I realized that with the tone and body language he was using it would likely cause offense. (taking him at face-value)

I don't tend to engage in those types of negotiations, I only go for what's fair from the start, otherwise there's no trust. I think you're right that he was assuming/hoping I was dumb and would give up the tyres easily.

Well you were buying tyres from a scrap yard, so it's not exactly an unreasonable assumption on his part is it?

Thing is - couldn't you have gotten a brand new set with full warranty, and decent service without a shady scrap guy, for just a bit more than that $300 you spent if you'd shopped around for a sale? I'd think that extra 200-300 bucks is worth avoiding the hassle not to mention having a warranty.

I have only purchased new wheels twice, but both times the old wheels were kind of old and average the tire place acted like they were just going to keep them. The first time I did this I paid the tire place to put my tires on the new wheels and put them on car. They did so. When I was getting ready to pay them I told them to just put the old wheels in the trunk and they looked at me like I was speaking Klingon. I think they just assumed they wee keeping them. I then told them I wanted to keep them to use for snow tires.
The second time as I was picking out the new wheels they offered to "recycle" my old wheels free of charge. The bottom line is they are your wheels, you don't owe him anything, but if you feel he went above and beyond for you and you have no use for those old wheels it might be a nice gesture to let them keep them. |
