I feel for you mate. I know this feeling only too well having experienced it a few times over the past 3 decades. On each occasion, I don`t mind admitting I was a blubbering wreck.

The Rainbow Bridge
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together.

Sorry for your lose.

You can expect to feel that emptiness for 3 or 4 months at least. I actually mourned the loss of my dog longer (and harder) than my father (as someone mentioned before me).

If I had to judge this planet solely on on humans I would think this place is hell...but since there are dogs on this world I know that it is actually a great place and that people just suck!

As an avid, lifelong pet owner (both dogs & cats)...I've had to put a few oldies down over the years. I know how tough it is. I've had to agonize over the decision each time.

Cherish the memories and be thankful for the time well spent.

Although it doesn't make it easier...you did the right, compassionate thing. He/she would surely thank you if possible.

Deepest condolences.

17 years is a good life for a dog and sounds like ya sent her out with class I've had a couple pass and even though you'd like to able to say it's just a dog to make shit easier on ya tough to do that when ya spend so much time with them they become family. Haven't had any animals in a few years due to traveling too much, schedule kinda calmed down now so been debating adding a new partner in crime maybe next year.

Thank you and here's a photo of her keeping an eye on a girlfriend I'm sure you can relate to.

Damn I miss that dog.

Thanks everyone. Man the house seems empty now.

I had a girlfriend ask me once as she was petting Lucky if I thought Lucky liked her. I told her she I'm sure she does but probably thinks you are stupid. A couple times a week when I'm spanking you I'm sure she thinks "wow she peed on the floor again" lol

I never thought a gfy thread could bring tears to my eyes.I`m verry sorry for your loss.Dogs are really family so when they gone it takes a part of yourself with them.I had 2 dogs die in my arms until now and don't wish that experience to nobody, but thats life you know.I still have another dog now, hes 6 years old.I know i`m going to go trough it again hopefully 20 years from now,but the joy and love he brings into out lifes is worth the sorrow.Again i`m sorry for you and try to get a puppy of hers if you can don't already have one.

R.I.P.

I'm not sure. The vet gave her 2 shots. The first was a heavy sedative to relax her and give me a few last minutes. Then he came back and gave her a shot directly into a vein which caused her to almost immediately die. Fuck it was sad.

A few years back we went through the exact routine with Sammy - a 7yr old black cat I was quite attached to.

We had no warning signs that anything was wrong. We simply found her in distress in the kitchen one morning. She'd become jaundiced literally overnight. We rushed her to the vet and I figured it might be something simple they could fix with a steroid shot or something. I was absolutely floored when the vet said her kidneys had failed. He gave her a saline IV to hydrate her long enough to bring her home one last time for our daughters to say goodbye.

And then we took her back to the vet and went through the same scenario you described above. Tore me up inside. 8 years later I still see that moment in my head like a video.

She was a tough old dog, broken hip, cancer survivor, 3 vestibular attacks, finally her kidneys were failing and there was nothing to do but make her happy for a few more days.

Here she is playing with another puppy about 5 years ago.

I won't own a dog (the only animal worth owning) simply because my allergies make it like having a really bad cold all the time.

I love wrestling with animals, causing mischief.

The dog below I would love going on midnight 3 mile runs with, took care of him for 3 months for a friend, he was good enough that I'd let him run without a leash. I'd wrestle him in my house and get him all roweled up and clawing me.
Despite the allergies, I still let this little booger sleep in my bed with me.

My friend took him back after he got back from the Colorado trail. I miss him, but the memory of allergies reels me in whenever I think of my time with him.
