just recently i almost went to a McDonalds for lunch but i noticed a grocery store across from it. We only had thirty minutes. So we bought two nice rolls some jambon ham from spain some nice cheese and some fruit juice.

Cost...about the same. Time about the same. Feeling after? Way better

Here in Australia there profits are going down every year. They have changed there menu to more quality but they still are not making money like the 90's peoples taste have changed for better healthier foods and unless they spend mega bucks( which they can do ) everyone will still see them as unhealthy and uncool. They will survive in poor areas but they have already closing down in wealthy places.

Like Joshua G said. They need to go back to just making good food, at a cheap price, and fast. Not crazy big menus. Nothing fancy or expensive. Even their average burgers got pricey. They need to rework that to what made them huge. Value and speed. Leave the gourmet and healthy options to other companies. Or start up another subsidiary for that option.

In 1974 the cost of a single burger was 30 cents, that's 1.44 in today's money but you can still buy a burger for a dollar. They've just gotten away from being a place where Mom can take a night off from the kitchen. They should return to Burgers, Fries and Drinks.

Pizza places are in danger of trying to offer too much as well IMHO. Domino's dropped "pizza" from their name for the love of god.

For some reason, I always imagine that In N Out Burger is what McDonalds would have been like back in the 50's and 60's before they brought out the food scientists. We need more In N Out burgers.

Just read that article Kawaii posted. New 'Homey' Menu Items include $4.99 burgers. In most places a pound of beef is less than $4 for consumers. Mcdonalds pays 30 cents for a pound of beef A POUND. I goto McDonalds maybe once or twice a year, the last time I was there the meat patty was so thin. The burger was all bun and I was like WTF. Then you goto local places, or places like Chipotle or Garbonzos and it's all totally healthy great food fresh chicken etc a half the price of McDonalds. It's all about the money @ McD's now they've fucked the consumer for too long I hope they rot in hell.

For $4 I can make 4 burgers/next to no fat/from Oz or Canada or JP/ grilled toppings etc...at home. IN a very short time.

I think one of their main strategies may prove to be home delivery though. Pink slime delivered to your door. Beats gettin outta the bark-o-lounger, I guess.

They are closing 100 stores in Japan. Not surprised the country is not on their list of developing markets.

Shake Shack is coming though. They should rock this place if they deliver their burgers NYC style.

McDonalds will still be around. While sales and profits are down, they aren't in danger of going away overnight. Even their lower profits are still better than most company's best profits.

They just need a new CEO with some fresh ideas that can scale down their menu and something that needs to be wo0rked on and has been touched on in this thread already: they need to fix their customer service. The occasional wrong order will happen, but grumpy employees, slooooooooooooow service and driving to 3 different windows is stupid. If I have to order at one window, pay at an other and pick up my food at a third, it makes it slower, not faster.

In my opinion...Fast Food is pricing itself out of existence.

McDonald's used to be the place I went to for a 40 cent hamburger, 25 cent fries, and a 25 cent drink.

Now you're lucky to get a combo meal there for less than $6

Fast food was always supposed to be cheap.
Hell, just a few years back I would go to Arbys and get 5 roast beef sandwiches for $5.
I went there 2 days ago and ordered food for 3 people.
The cost? $31 !!!!

They have raised prices on everything so fast and so high that it's taking them out of their market.

Especially sodas.
When fast food joints are charging $3 for 10 cents worth of soda...people on a budget just can't afford that.

And face it...most "rich" people don't eat fast food.
A lot of McDonald's customer base were people who don't have a lot of extra money and would grab lunch there on lunch break because it was fast and cheap.

No, I don't think it's the "nutritional value" that is hurting them. Most guys who work "real" jobs don't give a fuck about that. The majority of guys working real jobs love to eat wings and drink beer.
McDonalds 1/4 pounder with cheese is "health food" to them. lol

No...I think it's the price.

Why pay that much for crappy fast food when you can basically go to a half decent diner like Dennys or a local family owned restaurant and get much better quality food for the same price.

The key to cheap at McDonalds is stick to the $1 menu. You can get 3 McDoubles and have a bigger burger than their pricey burgers like the quarter pounder etc. $5 on the value menu and you are stuffed. But if you go for any of their combos, you are paying way more now.

I love A&W stands! How much does it cost where you are at? A few months ago our local one opened back up (it's closed during winter). the mcdoubles aren't $1 anymore. They are like $1.50 but yup that's the best value. Once a week when I get groceries I'll stop off at mcds and either get 2 mcdoubles or 2 bacon mcdoubles and a small dr pepper (just enough to wash it down). Cost me $3.83 or $5.35

Big Mac, 2 double cheeseburgers and a large fries is my usual maccy d order (£7/$11), used to have that once a week (went through a phase of more than that but my asshole wasn't very grateful) then once a month, then every couple of months until last time I went it took 10 minutes for them to bring my order out while I sat there bored shitless in the car park, so I pulled links and blacklisted them. A maccy's once in a while ain'y gonna hurt anybody though

Agreed but I think the problem is simply the whole stigma attached to the name "McDonalds". It's just for so long been synonymous with "cheap addicting fast food that is causing obesity". Should have done something about that a long time ago but probably too late. You never know though..

Also somewhat ironically I think the recession has hurt them in the sense that there seems to be many many more other options whether large operation or small at the same price point and better food and/or service.

McDonald's owned a majority stake in Chipotle when it had just 16 restaraunt. It helped build Chipotle up to 500 locations then completed divested from them in 2006 Their initial investment of $360,000,000 allowed them to take out $1.5billion when they divested

They also owned Boston Market and divested in them in 2006 as well so they could focus only on the McDonalds brand.

here a&w is a restaurant much like mcdonalds. its not a stand. anyways, for 2 teen burger combos its something like 16-18 bucks. not quite as cheap as mcdonalds but it tastes better. i don't know if they still do it but they used to serve your root beer in a frosted glass mug. the a&w root beer is the only time i'll drink pop.

Then you goto local places, or places like Chipotle or Garbonzos and it's all totally healthy great food fresh chicken etc a half the price of McDonalds. While sales and profits are down, they aren't in danger of going away overnight. Even their lower profits are still better than most company's best profits. They just need a new CEO with some fresh ideas that can scale down their menu and something that needs to be wo0rked on and has been touched on in this thread already: they need to fix their customer service. The occasional wrong order will happen, but grumpy employees, slooooooooooooow service and driving to 3 different windows is stupid. McDonald's used to be the place I went to for a 40 cent hamburger, 25 cent fries, and a 25 cent drink. Now you're lucky to get a combo meal there for less than $6 Fast food was always supposed to be cheap. Hell, just a few years back I would go to Arbys and get 5 roast beef sandwiches for $5. I went there 2 days ago and ordered food for 3 people. The cost? $31 !!!! They have raised prices on everything so fast and so high that it's taking them out of their market. Especially sodas. When fast food joints are charging $3 for 10 cents worth of soda...people on a budget just can't afford that. And face it...most "rich" people don't eat fast food. A lot of McDonald's customer base were people who don't have a lot of extra money and would grab lunch there on lunch break because it was fast and cheap. No, I don't think it's the "nutritional value" that is hurting them. Most guys who work "real" jobs don't give a fuck about that. The majority of guys working real jobs love to eat wings and drink beer. McDonalds 1/4 pounder with cheese is "health food" to them. lol No...I think it's the price. You can get 3 McDoubles and have a bigger burger than their pricey burgers like the quarter pounder etc. $5 on the value menu and you are stuffed. A maccy's once in a while ain'y gonna hurt anybody though
