Just a small correction - there are currently 99 operating plants

And there are currently 24 new ones either being built or in the planning stages - 4 should come online in the very near future

And the parts come from China, as well as many other countries - and there is nothing secret about their construction - other than the security and cybersecurity details

I stand corrected, which boat were you on? I was on the USS Tautog ssn639. I was a sonar Tech, but as you know, everyone had to know how to throw the switch in engineering. Did you ever meet Rickover? He took a little ride on our boat, interesting person.

I would like to know more about the energy output and economics of a setup like this. This one reflects sunlight to a boiler to generate steam, turn generators and provide electricity. But regular electric panels convert sunlight to electricity directly. Are they somehow less efficient? If they could use the direct sunlight-to-electricity panels they would save all those birds.

I was on the USS Los Angeles (SSN-688)..and yes being the first in class we had too many visitors - Jimmy Carter (he used to be a nuke engineer), Rickover and too many others to count - they all had their eccentricies

I was the Engineering Watch Supv so basically I had to be able to both startup and shutdown the plant

Yeah - although the rad levels we were dealing with are miniscule compared to normal activities people get day to day just living their lives...we just had to be able to prove how much they received for legal basis

I think the best comparison I ever heard made was when Rickover was before Congress testifying on nuclear safety, he made the true statement that he had picked up more radiation flying to Wash DC in one flight, then normal nuclear operators get in a year operating a plant

Dead birds are a big negative. Evidently the output the way they're doing it now must be most efficient compared to energy directly from the panels? The article simplifies how enegy is really created, it's not just heating up water to steam. I saw a special on this on Discovery channel and it's a special heavy thick solution that's almost a solid that's heated up and it becomes more fluid and superheats water to steam, this is how it's able to still generate electricity through the night, the thick solution retains massive heat like a thermos
