I can't say much about the GL2, but I love the vx-2000.

Not much help I know...

The reason I ask is because people like AaronM use the VX2000 as opposed to the GL2 and it seems more people use the VX2000 so I was wondering why. People can't just post answers like they have times before saying "vx2000 is a great camera because I use it" because they havent used both and I want to know what influenced them to purchase one over the other.

They are both great cameras.

I own a GL2 and love it. I have goofed around with a vx2000 to see if there was a difference and I did not notice any.
I bought the GL2 after reading many reviews and comparisons. I also bought a XL1s and an EOS10D. It made the best sense to go all on brand due to batteries and lenses.

both are good, but i think the VX2000 is better.

i prefer the XL1 (all our videos are shot on XL1) but if you're worried about budget, it's likely too expensive to start out with.

I understand now guys It brings up another question, why would someone need both a lower priced camera such as the GL2 AND a higher priced camera such as the XL1?

We run 2 cameras, and my partner wanted the big gun.....
I must say, I do love the quality of the XL, it is a fantastic camera. For the stuff we shoot for DVD, you can tell the difference. For web porn, it gets lost to some extent. We will be buying another camera in the next couple of months and I will get a second GL2, It is an easier camera to run, the size and veiw finder make it a better camera to run in close quarter shooting. Also, I already own a ton of batteries for it.

Our XL-1 sits int he corner, I'm mostly using it for mainstream work shooting movies and video's. We did an entire movie on the XL-1 (edited in final cut pro) ADR'd in Vegas, Nuendo. (Will be in next years sundance, cross my fingers it will do well)

Its totaly overkill for web work...

But when EscortBiz was having problems with a provider producing something that looked like it was shot on Hi-8 or VHS I told him to tell them to rent an XL-1... bam shot was what he wanted.

I prefer the Sony and my Panasonic. My panasonic is the smallest of the 3CCD its an amazing camera problem is you CANT get it any more... Dont ask me why..its like they totaly pulled the line.
The thing I love about it is that its so small and un-obtrosuve the models love it.

When that doesnt work I break out the VX2000

With good lighting and a compatent eye the quality of the 3 is approx the same, although the XL-1 handles lower light better.

vx2000 is way better because it has 1/3" CCD chips versus the GL's 1/4" CCD's
I have tested my buddies GL1 and his GL2 against my vx2000 and the VX2000 is better. In bright sunlight or very bright studio lights you will not notice much of a difference, but under normal indoor lighting or a small video light you will notice it greatly.

Cheers,
BV

IMHO: Both cameras will produce pretty much equal video quality under ideal lighting conditions (i.e. studio or outdoors on a sunny day). I chose the VX2000 because it produces much better video in low light conditions. So, it depends on where you normally shoot. If you use it much in the real world where you can't control your lighting conditions the VX2000 is without a doubt the best choice!

Does anyone know anything about the High Definition camcorders? I have a project that needs to be shot for the net and TV at the same time so I am interested in finding out if these are worth anything. http://www.gearpreview.com/film/hd/hd10u.html

Bingo. Although all three , XL-1s, GL 2 and V2k all have their pros and cons, nothing compares to the V2k for indoor, low light conditions, not even the bazooka XL-1s. The XL-1s produces great outdoor shots in natural sunlight that are just amazing, but indoors the V2k reigns. The GL 2 also lags a bit behind in indoor lowlight situations.

Basically you should purchase your camera based on the conditions you will most likely shoot in, for indoor shots aimed for distribution over the web, the V2k is a better buy. It's a better value of the three and gives a better indoor shot.

We tested both before buying the VX2000. Most of our work is shot on the fly, or not in the best conditions (studio, etc.). The VX was far superior in the lower light, but the quality was pretty much the same in full daylight.

The drawback to the VX is that if you plan on pulling screen captures from it, you really need to shoot in progressive mode to get the best quality, and that captures at a somewhat choppy 15 fps, while the GL2's progressive (movie mode) is a full 30 fps, if I remember correctly.

We had a small problem with getting excess noise and wind with the VX outdoors, so I bought a $2 windscreen for the mic and that pretty much solved that.

Other than that, the VX rules

Can you please tell me where to get the wind screen for the vx-2000, if you got it online...
Thanks,

The GL2 is great, especially if you plan to do anything outdoors. The 20x optical zoom is sweet. Indoors you need to add a bit of light, no biggie. If someone would combine the lens of the GL2 with the chips of the V2K, that would be perfect. Both cameras are great and I plan to use my GL2 for a long, long time.
