Half Dome is a granite dome in Yosemite National Park, located in northeastern Mariposa County, California, at the eastern end of Yosemite Valley ? possibly Yosemite's most familiar sight. The granite crest rises more than 4,737 ft (1,444 m) above the valley floor.

The park estimates that about 50,000 hikers use the cable handrails to climb Half Dome each year.

everything has it's risks - some more than others. Just cos there's a cable and wooden steps, I reckon a big chunk of those 50k/yr think there's little danger....and the guy that died was one of them

As a child I was deathly afraid of heights. We lived in a 2 story house and even going down the stairs bothered me.

When I was 14 my family climed Ayers Rock in Australia and I was forced to join them, otherwise I would be left behind with relatives I didnt know very well. It was terrifying at first but once I got going, I kept going and by the time I got to the top my fear of heights had vanished. From that day on I had zero fear of heights. Very weird. lol

I would definitely do that, but with my legs the way that they are with this leg disability it would be a stupid idea. I'd end up killing myself, but if it wasn't for that I would do that.

The incline isn't as steep as it looks in the first picture.

Think about it, it's the USA, leader in litigation: if it was too dangerous, you wouldn't be able to do it ;)

Rope swinging is that dangerous. You just have to cycle your ropes - I mean, that's what dynamic rope is built for. You need to get the angle of swing correct, to ensure that your freefall is on a slight arc etc.

No doubt he knew exactly what he was doing, but these things happen, I guess.

BTW, the wikipedia page for Leo Houlding says that he's climbed the 'Angel of the North'
