What is there to do in upstate New York?

I can drive to Plattsburgh in about 90 minutes. Not sure what border crossings are like these days though.

What's there to do in that area in the summer? Any family type day activities?

My father in law bought a house in the Adirondacks this past summer, closer to Lake George. Lake Champlain is great...rent a boat, good bars, weather is awesome this time of year. Great opportunity to get away

I'm in Montreal. I can get all of that in Mt. Tremblant.

I was thinking more along the lines of a day trip or something like that.

That's upstate upstate. If you're the outdoorsy type, there's a ton to do. If you're not, I guess there's some nice scenery.

Watkins Glen has some hiking and boating (my girl used to be a director at an animal sanctuary up there, so i've spent a bit of time in the area). overall, i've never seen anything all that interesting other than some pretty good hiking.

That's right up near Raybrook FCI. Between Lake Placid and Lake Saranac if I'm not mistaken. I studied the correctional arts up there as an involuntary student for about a year before they shipped me out to Boron FPC for another 6 months.

I looked up the city activities for Plattsburgh... damn, you'd think the population was about 40.

Last year when I was in New York for a week, I took the trains all over the city and never once saw this "upstate" that you speak of...

Mark Twain is buried in Watkins Glen. Noticed it on the GPS points-of-interest on the way back from Atlantic City to Niagara. Stopped by and saw his gravesite.

The last time I was upstate I went to Gouverneur to visit a friend. I thought things were quiet in WNY its beyond boring up there unless you are into outdoor activities.

Plattsburgh sucks...if you are gonna make the drive go to Burlington.
Good music scene there, good bars, on the lake.
Watkins Glen is beautiful, and a great day hike. It's also close to Ithaca and a bunch of wineries around the finger lakes but thats a much further drive for you from Montreal.
