So.. someone gives you their myspace/fb password...
So. Someone technically challenged gives you their myspace password or facebook pw... to update their pictures... do some layout changes... in a professional (yet non paid, probono business) sense...
how often do you peek and look at it? and to add a twist to the question... if it's a guy... and he hits on your 16 year old niece (who then tells him to get lost).... how often would you read it? Oh.. and he's married? Do you tell the wife he's fucking random girls on myspace? Do you tell the wife not only is he fucking random girls on myspace, but he's hitting on underage girls with 99 listed as their age? What's the ethics here? I looked. Repeatedly. Never told wife anything. Never told him I knew he hit on my niece... but we did break our "charity" work with their company today... and I revealed all the shit I knew... and how he was lucky I kept my mouth shut... So what would you do? Would you have kept looking? said something?

i would of done the work and not went looking again. i would have no reason to read the messages or whatever else. i typically would not want to peak into anyones private sanctuary, be it a myspace, facebook, or even a diary. main reason would be that i know damn well i would always find something in everyones private lives that i would not want to know.
you go in there and then your stuck with what to do with the information or what not to do. whole line of moral and ethical shit that may eat at you. |

If you see something that jumps out at you while you're accessing something that's necessary to complete your job, fine... anything further and you've probably stepped over the line.
You DID use the word "professional" in your OP, right? |

If he REPEATEDLY hit on your niece and she kept telling him to fuck off, yes I probably would, though I'd consider doing something more along the lines of notifying authorities or something vs. some vengeance type shit. If it was a one-time thing, she told him to fuck off and he did, then no. Why? Because if he's not your problem beyond that one thing he did once, then there's no sense in prying into his/his wife life. His wife's in a shitty situation...you telling her about what he's doing doesn't really make it any better...only now she's taken the red pill and knows the reality of what she's living with. A whole lot of people are perfectly fine living in a fake happiness than a real misery. MAYBE in the long run it will help her life but you really don't know that...in the short run it'll likely upset her and it'll definitely upset him. It's nice to play god and all that, but it's just not worth it. I mean what if the guy is a bit more psycho than you know and upon knowing that you've been spying on his life, tell his wife stuff etc. decides he doesn't really like you very much and wants to fuck you up? Do you REALLY want to deal with that? Again, if he was ALREADY an ONGOING problem in your life, perhaps it'd be worth considering but otherwise, no way.
One of my ex gfs had an ex who was a real "class act"...aka lying sack of shit charmer type, basically goes from woman to woman lying his way into their lives and hearts, lives/mooches off of them, things end up blowing up at some point (lies are found out or his real abusive side comes out or whatever) and he then moves on...moves somewhere else, targets someone else, etc. She is exactly like you in that she is snoop master and can't lay off his profiles. She finds that he's using a fake name on MySpace and is onto another girl, a young naive girl who's head over heels for him etc. She must have pondered half a dozen times whether or not to tell this girl about the real him. Each and every time I talked sense into her, because he had been constantly stalking my ex long after they were separated, including while she and I were together, and doing shit like call/hang up, emailing/IMing her, etc. numerous times after she constantly had said she wants him completely gone from her life and I believe even threatening her at some points. My point to her was that the girl is in too deep as it is and helping her out of it isn't going to improve her life immediately, while it may in fact cause havoc on my ex's life if this douche then were to come after her. Long story short, the girl ended up finding out eventually anyways about the lies of this guy and left him. Voilah, problem solved itself. Some people aren't so lucky, but then again who are you to pry into their lives and help them live it, plus possibly cause shit in your own if the guy turns out to be the unstable vengeful type? Not only that, but the amount of time my ex spent snooping, she could have been making money or something something else that would have been a better use of her time to improve her life. Then again I play too many games and shit so I'm not one to speak, lol.

Yeah.. We were doing photography for their company's events... and promotions and marketing... and the dude has this HUGE ego... we could never do anything "right" despite working for free... Nothing worse than an asshat who complains about small details to someone doing hours and hours of work for free...
not only did he hit on my niece... but every other female on my friends list... and me as well... but that went nowhere because he's a loser... but yeah.. I only checked it once the first time.. until my niece told me that he hit on her... then I kinda made a habit of reading it multiple times after that... I feel guilty.. but am kinda glad I was reading it.. because I read today a huge email of him searching for a "new photographer who has his best interests at heart".... (the chick had huge boobs... small waist.. and some BS motorcross pics on her profile she took... I'm assuming he was just using her).. he promised her "national exposure"... haha. no. so I mean we were able to quit.. and not lose the 200 or so we lose working for them each month.... this month... so I mean reading the emails did pay off with this dude... I only personally threatened him with it... so he didn't try to ruin our business rep when we quit today.... I actually don't think i'd carry thru with telling the wife anything.... But I kinda like him knowing that I do know... keeps a freeloading asshat like him on his toes.

If you say something to his wife what is to stop him from blaming you for "planting" the messages / emails / whatever because after all, you do have his password.
If someone gives me their password for whatever reason, I usually suggest they change it afterwards so there is no question that anything that happens is linked to me. I'd say you crossed a major line both continually reading his messages, as well as calling him out in person. You could have kept it professional without him knowing that you were reading it - and from the sound of it I wouldn't have done business with him anyway if he was bitching about a free service. Remind me not to give you my password ;) |

I hate having somebody's password because if something happens the blame could fall on me too. But unfortunately lots of passwords get in my hand as I work as a programmer... But when someone gives me his/her password, even if they are my clients or my friends, I ask them to change it after I finish my work.
This avoids temptations too ![]() I could just say that I wouldn't like to have somebody checking my profiles or messages or any other private stuff, so I'd rather not do this to someone else... |

I go further and ask someone to change the p/w before I log in, so they can change it back to what they're used to after I'm done. (They're probably more likely to change TO rather than FROM what they want...)

What are the ethics? I think if you see a felony or a crime, it should be reported.
