"She" Instead of "He" in articles
Have you noticed how more and more online articles are using the "she" pronoun instead of "he" when they refer to a person? I'm noticing it all the time. Obviously it's part of the feminist movement to "battle stereotypes" and also has to do with what's called "inclusive language". However I find it incredibly silly and distracting when I come across a "she" pronoun simply because I know it's there to make a point, so it ultimately distracts from the topic matter in question.
Example: When looking for a doctor, make sure she's highly qualified. We don't know who started the fire, but she will be held responsible. ... stuff like that. Have you guys noticed this? Thoughts? |

No... I haven't noticed.
It's sad that your insecurities make you uncomfortable & distracted reading she instead of he. Did you know there are more women in the world than men? Imagine all the women who feel "uncomfortable" reading he instead of she, but you only give a shit about yourself lol If the writer is a woman expect to see she instead of he. Pay more attention to who the writer is and who the subject is. |

I guess you don't know proper grammar rules. In English (as well as other languages) "he" is used to refer to both men and women. If some women want to use it to "make a point" that's their thing.

If the writer is female then using "she" is appropriate. It's disrespectful to assume a female writer would use he. Not common sense. Why you think male writers aren't into using she is beyond me. All guys who write articles on cars you she to refer to the vehicle from my experience. It's the Trump era, anything goes old rules & etiquette don't apply. #ThanksTrump! |

Well, traditionally we would use "he" in both cases, since "he" covers both men and women, but it's true to get around this issue and not sound sexists you could choose to use "They're." What I'm seeing are a lot of writers using "she" on purpose. And contrary to what Bladewire says, who apparently is clueless when it comes to the issue, the gender of who is doing the writing doesn't matter.

Are you stupid or just don't understand? When you're talking about a person who's gender is undetermined (meaning it could be a man or woman, you just don't know yet) traditionally we would use the pronoun "he." Whether that's wrong or not is a separate issue. Some female writers use "she" to battle stereotypes and to close the gender gap. I think that's pretty obvious.

The Grammar Book says nothing about "traditionally", or officially, using a male subject pronoun, object pronoun or possessive pronoun by default in their pronoun section. BTW, two of my best writers are non native English speakers and their English is better than mine, not to mention their creativity. My question about your country was in reference to the tradition of using male pronouns by default. I was in no way implying that your English skills are dependent on your country of origin or native speaking tongue ![]() |

It's appalling how much time and energy is wasted arguing about petty things like this.
To answer the OP's question, I haven't noticed that but wouldn't be surprised if I came across it. My opinion : whosoever is triggered by seeing the word 'he' being used to refer to a general individual should know that replacing it with 'she' is very hypocritical because they are doing to same thing, just with the opposite word. |

In short: My analysis of the situation is that you have way too much time on your hands. ![]() Having said all this, I don't think any of this matters in the least bit. ![]() ps. I agree that the easiest way to avoid the issue completely is simply to use plural.

I thought the correct grammar was "he or she" when we don't know the gender reference? I did notice that the order gets changed up - she or he vs he or she... not sure if that's pc or not but that's what my English teacher told me to use back in high school.

Traditionally if the writer is female she will use "she" more often than "he" and vice versa.
I only find it distracting when the writer switches from one to the other (uses both). Stick to one please. LOL

I've been writing this way for years. When I was in college I took a technical writing class and in it the professor taught us to switch between he and she because, well, half the population is female and people like to feel included.

I didn't see "she" used very often, but I increasingly see "they" used in such scenarios.
Like "When looking for a doctor, make sure they're highly qualified." But what do I care? If I read an article about finding a doctor, as long as I receive the information that I was looking for, I don't give a shit on how the writer refers to the doctor. Also it might be just because of my extreme porn consumption but I like female doctors more anyway...

yeah I see this a fair bit. Like yourself, I don't make a mental note of it to wave around as an example, but does make me chuckle. I totally get why many prefer to shy away from using 'he' to refer to everyone, but making it 'her' or 'she' instead of 'they' is... I dunno... just comes off as petty rather than inclusive. Don't really give a fuck one way or the other tbh, but yeah it's def noticeable, so I'm not sure why nobody else here has seen it. Maybe they don't really concentrate on what they are reading ;) <--- mental cases and idiots, that last part is a joke, don't get triggered

Not really seeing this locally here. Even our news refers to transvestites in the context of their "biological gender"
