Have you noticed how more and more online articles are using the "she" pronoun instead of "he" when they refer to a person? I'm noticing it all the time. Obviously it's part of the feminist movement to "battle stereotypes" and also has to do with what's called "inclusive language". However I find it incredibly silly and distracting when I come across a "she" pronoun simply because I know it's there to make a point, so it ultimately distracts from the topic matter in question.

Example:

When looking for a doctor, make sure she's highly qualified.

We don't know who started the fire, but she will be held responsible.

... stuff like that.

Have you guys noticed this? Thoughts?

If the writer is a woman expect to see she instead of he. Pay more attention to who the writer is and who the subject is.

I guess you don't know proper grammar rules. In English (as well as other languages) "he" is used to refer to both men and women. If some women want to use it to "make a point" that's their thing.

Well, traditionally we would use "he" in both cases, since "he" covers both men and women, but it's true to get around this issue and not sound sexists you could choose to use "They're." When you're talking about a person who's gender is undetermined (meaning it could be a man or woman, you just don't know yet) traditionally we would use the pronoun "he." The Grammar Book says nothing about "traditionally", or officially, using a male subject pronoun, object pronoun or possessive pronoun by default in their pronoun section.

BTW, two of my best writers are non native English speakers and their English is better than mine, not to mention their creativity. My question about your country was in reference to the tradition of using male pronouns by default. My opinion : whosoever is triggered by seeing the word 'he' being used to refer to a general individual should know that replacing it with 'she' is very hypocritical because they are doing to same thing, just with the opposite word.

Either I didn't explain myself sufficiently or this is too complicated for you. I said "traditionally" because grammar rules change over the years. English is not my first language, but in what world does "he" refer to both male and female genders? The way I learned it and recall it to be standard practice is when attempting to cover both genders in writing, you simply default to the "gentler" gender and that will cover both. Politeness in writing, if you will. It has nothing to do with being overly politically correct or being a feminist or any of that BS in my opinion, it's just polite. No more no less.

In short: My analysis of the situation is that you have way too much time on your hands.

Having said all this, I don't think any of this matters in the least bit.

I've been writing this way for years. When I was in college I took a technical writing class and in it the professor taught us to switch between he and she because, well, half the population is female and people like to feel included.
