I had two 8K domains: 8KTeen.com and 8KTVPorn.com that I was letting expire when I got the email newsletter from them announcing it. I promptly renewed my names - one or two days before they would have been deleted.

I'm not a tech expert, but I think the value of 8K resolution might be in viewing on a virtual screen through AR or smartglasses, which we'll probably all be doing in a few years.

You don't shoot in 8k so your members can stream 8k videos, you should 8k so that you can crop 1080 or 4k if you need to. Also future proofing.

Also if you are shooting VR as the resolution is split between the two sides. Most of the top VR porn studios shoot in 8K now, some are experimenting with 12K. I think I read recently that there is a new 16K VR camera available that the studios are probably going to start using soon.

And even watching a VR movie in 8K (so 4K) the image does not look pin sharp at all, because the viewer is so close to the screen, and the image takes up the entire FOV.

As I said, in 5 years time everybody will be watching movies on virtual big screens through AR/smart glasses. Millions already do in bulky VR headsets such as the Meta Quest 3 or the Apple Vision Pro. And yes, millions will jerk off to watching porn wearing lightweight smart glasses. In that case, 8K will become the standard.

BTW, I sold the domain name 16KPorn.com a couple of years ago for $550. I think I sold it cheap.

It's very true in 8K VR though - pornstars who look good in 2D can look rank in VR. You not only see them in high-resolution 3D, they are close to the camera/viewer too. You get to see just how many layers of makeup they have on. And when they have duck lips or had nose jobs, it's a huge turnoff.

I always thought that 1 minute of 8K was around 2GB, depending on the fps settings.

It's simple. The higher the resolution, the more you can crop if you deliver in 1080 or 4K. you can cut between wide and tight, move the frame and generally do more manipulation, but you always have the higher resolution master. And with tech today, if you have your original in 16 X 9, you can interpolate into some pretty good looking 4 or 6K video.

We have ALL our content on our site going all the way to 2003 when we started. We started HD in about 2007, yet we shot then our "old" ( pre 2007) SD content in 4:3 ( as most did) BUT framing in 16:9 safe. Once HD become a norm we just took the 4:3 reframed to 16:9, and because we had a good quality lighting, our SD content is still selling and never had any complaints.Most viewers do not notice the difference.

One thing I do not get... why would I crop anything? We shoot and edit a movie...once finished no need to do anything to it... we deliver in 16:9 and in 1080

I get what you are saying for sure. But if you shot in 8K, but you deliver in 1080, and say you want to update as time goes on, you have that capability. Also, should you decide, say you want to start producing some 1080 by 1920, you will be zooming in and auto centering and recentering to produce those videos. So starting with 8K gives you a lot of latitude.

I was shooting native 16:9 in about 2003. It created a boisterous discussion about looking too "professional". I understand shooting safe for 16:9, but that is exactly the argument for shooting as high rez as possible, because you are zooming to fill the frame. I preferred shooting native 16:9 and it still has legs and now there are all kinds of ways to upgrade the definition, but 4:3 just dates your product.

In the old days TV was 4:3, but theatrical movies were 16:9 for at least 20 years prior. We made and sold movies to both , that is why we shot 16:9 safe ( NOT because we were smart).....we have nothing in 4:3 since about 2005

now everything is in 16 :9 so I do NOT see the reason for cropping.

I'm not sure if you know this, but there is a booming industry in what they call verticle film making. But aside from that, look around. Everyone is doing it. It is what people today are becoming used to. No point in passing up the doom scroller traffic for a little extra work.
