Way back in 1974 my friend and I were at the " Paved Wave " skate park in Cocoa Florida. A kid had rode his stingray bike complete with the banana seat to the park. One thing led to another and someone dared my friend to take the stingray down the main ramp into the big bowl. My friend took the challenge and made it all the way through the run.

I don't know when they started riding BMX in parks and ramps but I'm willing to bet no
one here can take it any more old school than that

Ahh hell yes BMX! Used to race every weekend back in middle school! Was always a good time, first bike was a Mongoose Comp (I think thats what it is) and after a week of owning it some fucker jacked it from the garage. Got a Mongoose Supergoose Pro a few days later, loved that bike. The thing was damn near 100% aluminum and was light as a feather.

i just finished rebuilding this 1973 raleigh grand prix road bike into a custom fixie, i havent got pics yet, ill try to get them soon.

My fav BMX as a kid was a Dyno.. Nitro i think. Injured many a body parts on that thing.

Here is my current street/dirt jump bike. 2005 giant STP2, this is a stock photo, mine is converted to single speed.

Awesome thread.

All my bikes were stolen but I had mongoose and the GT Pro Performer.

Saddest thing about this sport to me is that Mongoose is now an $89 Wal-Mart brand. That bike was so bad ass.

Anthony, what were the Mongoose rims called with the holes punched out between the spokes? That's what I had until I got the Skyway Tuff Wheel II's

That bigwheel is fucked up. Original but the steering bar is pretty lame though. Might need slimmer bars and a taller guy.

Pretty cool. Thats extremely early for a skate park! I remember hitting Cherry Hill skate park in NJ in 78 when it opened. I'm sure a few of my scars are from that night, lmao.

Wicked thread.
Wish I still had my Mongoose.

I had it chrome dipped and replaced practically every part. Uni seat, Oakley B1-B grips, Tuff-nek, 3 piece cranks which I can not remember the name of, shimano pedals, the cool 3-finger brake level....the works.

Did a couple races at the top of Londsdale in Vancouver and am still riding. Doing the Vancouver to Seattle ride for Cancer this weekend.

More pics!!

I had a white Haro frame with all kinds of a la carte parts on it. I must have put thousands of miles on that thing riding around the 5 boroughs in the 80's.

Good times...

Lost the bike in a house fire otherwise I would have kept it for sure...

I believe it was the first one built in Florida and one of the first in the country. This picture is an overview. On the left was a high takeoff point and you dropped into the bowl and then snaked your way back on the smaller banks. On the right is the freestyle area. No pro shop, no place to sit and no rules. Nothing but a fence with a guy at the gate taking money

To stay on topic I found a few old pics to check out. First one was taken in 1984 underneath the Huntington Beach pier as some guys put on their own little exhibition during the OP Pro surf contest. The second pic was taken in Cocoa beach but I can't put a date on it.

99% of the trix were done by guys like "Marin Apaghiro" *sp* .. and another 4 guys ..

But I was on the very first BMX freestyle teams in Canada .. we toured around North America .. teams Like the SkyWay team and BMX Plus magazine had guys like RL Osborn and Mike Buff .. Bob Haro was a kid and We all met up and rode together at places like "Big O" .. trix those days are NOTHING compared to the shit they are pulling off today with Jay Mira and stuff

I will drag out some pix I have from these last couple yrs .. ( Fuck I am 41 ..42 this summer ) But I have some very recent pix lol

Listen, it is definitely one of those corny 80s movies. Its not the goonies. But if you were into bike riding when you are 14-15. It was cool.

holy shit does this bring back memories. i no longer have pictures or even my old bikes. i lived bmx, raced both amateur and pro for a short time. never was much for street freestyle and was into just racing, ramps, and bowls. riding 8-10+ hours a day was delightful and almost like a holiday. riding miles was no task and it was a form of punishment almost when i had to ride the bus to school instead if by bike. i could go on and on like a few of you and it is a blast of old memories, many great and a few painful.

last bike was my blue alloy race inc. remember the day i finished assembling it to take it out for its first ride. the bike was so light that when i reached the small street hill near my house and started to peddle as i would my previous bike and the damn thing fliped up from under me and i landed on my back with my head ringing and at the same time shock and delight in feeling how light that was. was a very sad period when they went out of biz in 84 along with my sponsorship.
