Micheal you think next week we can regain access to our actual visa cards or we will need another method to get our money from virtual visa account?

You've been a member on GFY since Nov 2005. If you haven't figured out how to search threads and posts in the past five years, maybe its time to stop calling yourself a webmaster, put down the keyboard and go grab a McDonalds job application. :2 cents:

Im not sure how many of you had this experience:

A month ago i needed to get a new pass. It took weeks to get one because "the card embossing machine" had problems. Was it maybe more like: "Visa didnt want to be on the cards anymore" ?

Serious question btw. Happend, for real.

For the rest of it, im with michael o, although its hard to stay relaxed.

I really think they ARE trying to solve things, i just think the real reasons havent been put out in the open, and thats why most webmasters are freaking out.

lucPL 09-04-2010 07:50 AM

i hope that im wrong but lets take a look at this and think:

1) lowering ATM withdrawal limits WITHOUT ANY NOTICE just before affair -to not allow users withdrawn too much cash ?
2) payout date, a lot of sponsors loaded funds
3) VISA suspending hours before LONG weekend ? they make a big move NOT GIVING ANY REASON and go home ? i dont think so
4) VISA is not a bank they dont keep any money, all money withdrawn by ATM go trough bank account. If its ok with bank account then where this money are ? not on VISA account because they dont do this, if not on bank account then ?

like i said i hope im wrong but this isnt looking too good

we can only speculate now. Nobody knows for sure what happened! All I'm really hoping for is to have all this mess resolved! That's what matters the most in situations like this!

The money is safe, you will get your money if not we would not be here posting and would not tell Account Holders what the current withdrawal options are and so on.

Michael, we know you are a good guy, but we saw so much financial systems came crushing down, many of us lost tens of thousands dollars there, some even hundreds and usually their representatives were lying about "all is gonna be good". I'm not saying you are lying, but you may not even know what's really happening if your bosses were not honest with you. You are only an employee after all.

I'm worried about my money stuck there and I'm even more worried that though I might still get the money if epass will not be able to work with cards many people from third-world countries will be ruined as adult webmasters. I have numerous bank accounts and I can get wires from most essential of my sponsors and clients so I will not die over it probably, but there is a lot of people who use epass as an only method of receiving money from sponsors and paying for hosting, domains, designs etc. They will be affected and thus will pull others - those hosters, designers, etc.

All we can do now, though, is wait when the holiday ends. There is no use in conspiracy theories. But if you will not be able to present some new solution until the end of next week - things will really start going weird.

I love how what actually happened is hush hush even though they have millions of peoples fucking dollars, exactly like the WMC fiasco in that regard.

I was a software engineer working in a company which had a similar thing done to it by MasterCard (MC from here on). The circumstances may be similar or vastly different, but the program which triggered it was used mainly by online gambling services, and we provided customers with Maestro/Cirrus branded MCs.

The product was ostensibly a prepaid debit card for travellers. The melt-down started when an MC official at an international event received marketing material for the card, and called the help-desk. He was told all about the benefits of the card, including the ?special? benefits like being able to load gambling winnings onto it and then withdraw them as cash from US ATMs (I should stress that this was a program operated by our client, not by us; we were just the platform.)

It turns out that this is money-laundering. You just aren?t allowed to market that. So our client (who operated the program) was investigated, and then we (who owned the payment platform) were also investigated. While a handful of people were using the program legitimately, the vast majority were using it for its ?special? benefits. MC also found that we should have known about it, and we?d failed to do correct due diligence. The program was shut down immediately, and all cards were de-activated, as its primary purpose was to facilitate money-laundering (we received two hours? warning, and I had a federal police officer standing behind me while I signed in and deactivated the card range). We lost our licence to access the MC network, and MC gave us 30 days to notify customers of legitimate programs and disconnect. We were successful in getting a court order extending this to 180 days.

MC has strict risk guidelines on this sort of thing. The integrity of the network is paramount: illegal money flows are targeted and stamped out vehemently. They would rather risk disconnecting thousands of legitimate cards than risk losing trust in a network which provides for billions of them.

The real problem is that it?s all private enterprise. Our contract with MC gave them all of these powers: if you don?t want to let MC have this sort of power over you, you don?t use their network. There is no right of appeal, especially for international partners (the court?s authority to even grant the time extension for our genuine legal programs was tenuous, and was only enforceable due to MC wanting to be nice to another party in the chain who was subject to Australian law).

I hope this is interesting information. If you want to know how the story ends, join the club: it?s still going. Perhaps you can visit David Tzvetkoff in a US prison and ask him if he knows.

I suppose what it really gets back to is that VISA is probably not doing this to comply with laws. They know that the best money for an organisation their size is to be made in massive, highly-trusted networks which are beyond reproach. They kick anyone off who might give them any kind of a smudge. Not just pr0n, obviously, I'm talking about money-laundering-style smudges. Which is not, of course, to say that this is what ePassporte was doing: there was neither trial nor opportunity to defend when MC came after us. It was "we're on our way, be ready to turn them off in front of a federal police officer when we arrive." They didn't have to prove that our client was doing anything wrong. They didn't have to prove that we should have known about it. They just decided that they were satisfied, end of story. We only got the extension from the court because they found that MC hadn't met the requirements under the contract to terminate with 30 days notice, and they had to fall back to the "we can kick you off just because we don't like the brand of office chairs you buy" 180 days.

Seems alot like whats going on.

Michael ? what can you say about lowering limits and its connection to VISA affair ?

no, not strange. Visa changed their policies for prepaid type cards and those policies went into effect june 30th. one of the changes was lowering the amount a person could withdraw using the card to 1,000 dollars.

so epassport issued their withdrawal limit statement as you saw, but i believe it was enacted too late, thus the problems.

why limit, when you can pull the plug and stop the whole thing just like they did the next day?

what were they thinking? "ok, the limitations are not going to work out, lets cryostate the system"

or maybe with those limitations they tried to show VISA they were playing ball, but it was too late and it was indeed visa who pulled the plug two days ago.

Yahook 09-04-2010 09:08 AM

Yes, I think if Epassporte will not solve this problem completely untill the end of next week it will be 100% dead then.

This is the problem - there is no anything big like epassporte and even if we find something smaller - there is always a risk it will happen again. Don't forget - this company worked 7 years to get where it is. And if it can be ruined just like that, there is no much good in other, smaller companies.

CXA 09-04-2010 09:27 AM

My $0.02

We all live in an increasingly interdependent world where actions taken by 3rd parties have a direct impact on us.

We see it all the time. Recalls ... policy changes ... warnings ... etc .. are all around us.

I have a whopping $183.52 in Epassporte and I don't use it much, so this current situation doesn't impact me much DIRECTLY ... however, I do have affiliate deals with programs that do use EP (I'm set up for checks).

If the problem continues then I may be inconvenienced as an INDIRECT consequence. Even then it won't be a big deal.

I can feel the pain and frustration of you guys that are dependent on EP for your day-to-day livelihood and business.

As I read the responses by Michael O and other EP representatives I get a VERY GOOD FEELING that they are 110% committed to getting this matter resolved fast and right.

FWIW: I predict that a year from now that fair-minded people will look back and give Epassporte props for "getting out in front of this .. and staying there" ll through the crisis.

I also predict that EP will develop "back up" protocols to prevent this from happening again.

I don't think this crisis will kill EP ... but it will make them stronger.

Has it been discussed on this thread that perhaps EP could set up some sort of emergency loan program if this goes longer than say another week? EP could lend money to help people who are particularly hard hit. Just a thought.

a2000 09-04-2010 09:28 AM

without electron I can live, but virtual visa was very comfortable to me :(

hope it will be fixed soon
