And if you really want to bake your noodle, look up what fractional reserve banking is. Pretty standard for an international wire in most places where you pay fees for both parties. If you would be in Japan, Singapore or Cayman Islands 120 bucks would be a bargain for such. You can always change your bank. I heard French and Dutch banks charge around 10 Euro per standard Swift wire.

You need to shop around. Every bank is cheap at something. In the old days when I was running a mailorder some banks charged me $30 for cashing US$ cheques. Then I found a bank that charged $15 for batches of 5 cheques maximum so I paid $3 per cheque.

Within Europe all wires in Euros are now free btw.

Paypal is not cheap at all. They charge 3% for transactions and another 2% for currency conversion. A 20k PP transfer would have cost you around 1k.

We just switched everything over to a credit union. That said, banks are like any other business - they provide services you may or may not choose to buy from them, and if you don't like one, shop the competition. There are bad banks, bad restaurants, and bad porn sites. I try not to buy from the bad ones. I decided I didn't like Chase, so I switched to Texas Federal Credit Union, which I like better. No whining needed.

I know it's not exactly the same but we have a country that has already gone through a Greece style default but on a much smaller scale with Iceland so it's interesting in the sense that this has happened to a country recently. The ramifications of a default are not on the same scale though
