I remeber attending the first year of the show - it was so jam packed in there you had a difficult time getting by people near the convention hall.

Shows how badly AVN has screwed the shows, with their ridiculous pricing and gouging. Coincidence?

It doesn't matter how many people attended (unless you're AVN) as long at the right people attend. Gleem was right when mentioning just one deal can make the difference. But that's a gamble of time and money less people are willing to make.

Seems few shows have gone away even with attendance complaints, but again it's been years & years since I've been to one. Each time the next show comes up I think about it, then get busy on something and don't think about it until the next show.

Something interesting is that even during the online porn 'glory years' the internet side of the biz was starry eyed and jealous at how BIG and opulent the video (vhs/dvd) shows were. Impressed by glitz instead of real $$$ and results.

I've always wondered about "meetings".

I don't think I've ever had one in my life. lol

I've done plenty of deals, usually late at night over a drink. But never went to a show, sat down in a conference room and had a "meeting".

How does the meeting go? Is it like this?:
Pornographer One: "I have porn"

Pornographer Two: "I have porn too"

Pornographer One: "Want to do a x-sell with my porn for your porn?"

Pornographer Two: "Yes"

Pornographer One: "GREAT meeting! Let's go buy an overpriced drink!"

Pornographer Two: "Sounds good because there aren't any sponsor parties anymore, and I have ten more meetings to go to"

Just seems like it's a lot funner to do it over a whore and a drink.

It didn't even get mentioned on the local news down here. I'd be surprised if it returns next year. By the way, the Diplomat is big because it is a convention hotel located in possibly the worst place you could have a convention. The middle of nowhere. South Beach is 15 miles away and Lauderdale is 10. You ain't walking anywhere unless you want to go to Wal-Mart. I always got a chuckle out of that. Of course this year might be a good time to get that case of Chinese dildos I've been thinking about.

I found that everyone that attended the show was serious and interested in talking business not bullshit. Of course attendance was not like it was years ago. At this stage of the game, all the weak players including shitty producers, lame sites, half-assed affiliate programs, and the companies that relied on screwing the consumer have pretty much been marginalized and eliminated. Now everyone that is left that can afford to attend a trade show is either really good at what they do or just there to see old friends from the glory days. People can say the show was small and it is not like the old days, but if they got on a plane, showed up and still didn't get anything accomplished then that's their own fault.

About the only place your walking to is that pizza join a couple blocks down.

I've been to 5-6 of the fla shows, and and equal number of the vegas shows. each progressively smaller, each less ROI. The price goes up the value goes down... Last year was and is the last AVN show I'll ever attend, simple as that.

Even a few years back it use to be a shuffle trying to figure out what to go do next because so much was going on you actually had to pick and choose. Got a LOT done, met and worked with great people because of those shows.

Last year was more a sit around trying to figure out what to do next because nothing was going on. Still met some good people, didn't work with any of them.

Meetings... had a few. Basically, "I can send you sales. You have to pay me 60 bucks up front for each and you have to pay 10k worth of those upfront joins or your SOL."

I only even went to the show because Mojohost flipped the ticket, and a none industry friend needed a break and popped for the room. Even then, it was not worth the gas to drive there or the time wasted.

I always found the absurdity of "meetings" at shows to be pretty funny as well. I think some sales people just like feeling important and busy.

I found that most were affiliate reps there on the company dime. Of course you are going to be in meetings.

I agree with Robbie and Fuze, when I have been at shows actively seeking business/deals/affiliates (years in the past), I never had "meetings". They weren't needed, the majority of your time you are going to be stuck having someone try to "sell you" on some BS and take an hour or two of your time, to relay something they could have said in 5 minutes. The end result is the same, 95% of the time, people don't follow-through anyways.

I remember at one point, I think 9 of our top 10 affiliates were people I brought in, even though I wasn't even a rep, who I met very late night, drinking heavily. Hanging out, without the salesperson bullshit, is always better than a sales pitch IMO in forming business relationships.

Are you more likely to remember the guy saying:

"Hey, we met at the show, I was the guy trying to sell you my awesome feeds, you said you'd take a look"

OR

"Man, wasn't that night awesome getting thrown out of that bar and escaping from the police on a stolen golf cart!?"

So, to those who say you need to be well-dressed, carrying around a notepad and have your iPhone loaded with appointments or you aren't doing business at a show, you may want to re-think that strategy.

The fact I couldn't cancel my $1k room (4 nights) even when I tried to 14 days before the event totally blows. Then later to not be able to sell it on for $400 told me there wasn't much demand for rooms.

You couldn't cancel 14 days ahead of time? Wow.

That's the kind of thing that gets on my nerves about shows. It seems like they always pick hotels that take advantage of us in every way. Bend us over and fuck us in the ass without lube.

And the bad part is...here in Vegas for instance there are PLENTY of hotel/casinos that would bend over backwards and offer discounts to AVN/Internext and XBIZ to bring their shows to them. Including ones here with TOPLESS pools.

But they cut sweetheart deals for themselves with overpriced Palms and Hard Rock respectively and we get over charged for everything and the girls can't even take their tits out.

I want to go to the Venus show in Germany. That looked a whole lot like the old mid 90's and IA2000 shows used to look like with naked girls everywhere and people having fun.

And somehow we did MILLIONS of dollars worth of business while getting fucked up and laid the whole time. No need for "serious" this and "serious" that. We went there, we got fucked up, we got some pussy, we shook hands, we made deals, we made money.

EDIT: You want affiliates to come back to shows? Give them some naked girls and some FUN. They sit behind a keyboard all fucking year long. Give them a REASON to make a show their vacation and they will come back like they used to.

Believe me, when you walk into a casino/hotel/whorehouse with Claudia-Marie and every hooker in the place starts complaining to the management because all the men are surrounding Claudia-Marie...you get thrown out.

It was something I never imagined happening in my wildest dreams!

"show was productive business wise" is a bullshit statement. Did someone cut you a check at the show? Did you cut someone else a check at the show? The truth is you really don't know if a show was productive until 1-2 months after a show. Everyone says YES at a show but that does not translate into links up and joins coming in until you get back and DO SOMETHING on both sides. Also, there is several names here I have worked with over the years that will remain nameless that are flat out slackers. You can inhale your own exhaust all you want about how much business you get done but the people that have worked with you know better.

I imagine that the majority do not own the company they are representing and are not going there on their own dime. They want to make sure that they get these mini-vacations for years to come.

What's wrong with a $50 grilled cheese sandwich?

While I agree that tons of biz can get done without meetings and I've done tons of deals over the years late night over a drink, there are certain scenarios where a meeting is necessary:

1. You don't want others seeing who you're talking to.
a. affiliate is thinking of switching sponsors & doesn't want Sponsor A seeing them talk to Sponsor B.
b. same goes for the sponsor program. if a competitors whale wants to switch to you sometimes its better to talk in private.

2. Sometimes you want to talk specifics and it's easier in a quite room instead of loud club.

3. To impress your client. Showing them you can afford a large meeting suite shows you have the money to do business.

4. If multiple people from a company are required to answer questions (owner, programer, rep) sometimes it's easier to meet at a specific time/place (meeting room) rather than try to find each other in a loud club. Or sometimes companies will have their reps scattered at different parties so that they have better coverage. Get answers from multiple people is easier if they're all together in a "meeting"

5. You don't want competition listening in and stealing your ideas. If you do 200 joins daily but let most people know you're at 10 to keep a low profile the last thing you want is someone overhearing your conversation and then copying your biz the next day.

And the list goes on...

As a webmaster I did all my biz like everyone describes. Now with AFF I understand the need for private meetings.

Just my

Everyone says YES at a show but that does not translate into links up and joins coming in until you get back and DO SOMETHING on both sides. Also, there is several names here I have worked with over the years that will remain nameless that are flat out slackers. You can inhale your own exhaust all you want about how much business you get done but the people that have worked with you know better.
right - i wasted many hours by discussing deals on shows and when following up later got no reply or just excuses

Madalton, exactly.

One thing I leaned years ago was to never waste a man's time. Your's or his. NEVER tell someone yes when you mean no and then ignore them when you get behind your computer. DON'T leave people wondering where they stand. If their products or services are not for you then SAY SO. It just isn't that hard.

So, to those who say you need to be well-dressed, carrying around a notepad and have your iPhone loaded with appointments or you aren't doing business at a show, you may want to re-think that strategy.

That is something I'd be into.

No doubt. You get that everywhere though. From shows, private meets, ICQ, e-mail, anything really. And it is not limited to our industry. That's life.

It boils down to being a numbers game. You can talk to 20 people and 19 of them can be flakes... the question is whether or not that remaining 1 makes up for the other 19.

true, i had similar experiences in my previous jobs as well. but still it seems to be worse in this business and considering that a trip to a show like this costs me about $2.5k to $3k because of the flights it's simply not worth it anymore. nowadays i profit from my show visits in the past and do deals on ICQ with people who don't attend either.

Just seems like it's a lot funner to do it over a whore and a drink.
its funny how this is actually a business for some and not a lifestyle

i dont get it

especially in this day and age i want a bit more information and even some real personal contact with decision makers before determining where my joins are going

i dont go to shows for parties or nude chicks or poker or drinks (i did that from 99-2004)

I go to shows to make more money. Period.
